The most stupid thing is, according to a UND alum that I work with, is that the Sioux tribe, doesn't even care about the name or the mascot and they don't want to be a part of the decision at all, because it is in no way offensive to them! It's the damn big wigs at the University trying to be pc.

Apparently one tribe was okay with it, one failed to give their approval -- so the NCAA says they must change their name.

My "source" at UND says that's the case. The other tribe has a couple "political" people that want/like the attention it brings to disagree with the other tribe. Crazy. I guess the bigwig supporter of the hockey arena said that if they change the name he's taking away all funding. They have the logo on all the seats and it's all over campus. Again, it's only offensive to a small few. That means "Oh, somone doesn't like it...we need to change it"

Someone doesnt like it I meant. Man I suck when I'm in a hurry. I would say if anything, Redmen, Redskins, those would be more likely to be offensive. Indians, Sioux, Seminoles, Utes etc..many times those are supporting many of the states heritage. What if I was Scandinavian and thought Vikings was steriotypical or only brought thoughts of violence from my ancestors? It would not be considered as racist. If anything the tribe names bring attention to them in a positive way.

I don't completely disagree. But I think you can come up with at least 5 important distinguishing factors between specific Native American tribes and "Vikings."

How about UND just change the spelling to Fighting Sue and possibly put a pink ribbon the mascots hair, thereby keeping the basic mascot and telling the NCAA offended PCs to shove it. For that matter, forget the change and tell them where to shove it, sue the NCAA and that "tribe."

Haha, noted.

The way I see it, there is nothing "hostile or abusive" about North Dakota's logo or mascot.

They let Utah, Florida State and Illinois keep thier logos and names, they need to stop picking on the little guys, the NCAA is coming across as being a bunch of bullies right now. And its despicable.

Next thing you know they'll start coming after the teams with names like Cowboys, Vikings, Trojans, Lumberjacks, Pioneers, Pirates, Buccaneers, Minutemen, Colonials and so on.

Just so you know,

Ute, Illini, and Seminole sovereign nations have given consent to the universities to use the nicknames. The Standing Rock Sioux and Spirit Lake Sioux had to consent to the nickname by 11/30/2009. Not sure who dropped the ball, or if one didn't want to consent, but full consent wasn't obtained.

Interestingly, the change is pursuant to the terms of a settlement between the university and the NCAA. The university agreed to be bound by the terms of the settlement: Get consent within three years, or change the mascot.
