having done my Navy ROTC time at Idaho, I spent a SHITLOAD of time in that pig. NROTC had the contract to clean the facility after every event (we also handled parking) so I was there late into the night, running a gas-powered blower, cleaning up everyone's messes.

In my ten years of coaching HS football in Idaho missed out on the ability to play in Moscow, but coached close to a dozen games in Holt, and I can say rather safely that Holt has few if any redeeming qualities. I was at a FB camp and a bunch of ISU guys were talking about a remodel that never took off, and one said said it would be putting lipstick on a pig...and another guy chimed in...yeah if the pig were dead and left out in the sun for a month to rot.

To be honest I cant fathom how they remodel Holt, without making it a total gut job. THe new remodel on Kibbie was actually well done and thoughtfully considered. The markups and renderings of the Holt redo suggest quite the undertaking, but I do wonder if they are going to get a full follow through on it.

FIRST, LET'S ESTABLISH that the "dome" of the stadium is not 50 years old. The building itself debuted as an open-air facility on October 9, 1971, but the giant wooden roof that sits atop a concrete stadium bowl was not finished until 1975. That completed an ambitious project to replace the old Neale Stadium, which was condemned in 1968 and destroyed by an arsonist a year later.

The new basketball arena looks nice. I like the timber framing and intimacy of it, looks like it's set below ground which is always great to get that 'pit' like effect even if it's just 4200 people.

The players' facilities look cramped though, and they didn't really highlight much of the loge/fan/booster amenities for a preview of that ultimate Palouse power brokering experience.

"They were just covered with a single layer of plywood and woodpeckers put holes in them so, if you stood in there, you'd see these beams of light coming through. It didn't really have any insulation, and apparently the heating system had conked out 25 years ago, and so it got progressively colder in there as the season went on. Of course with the bird holes, that added to the wind coming through the space."

when i worked in poky i always thought it would make for a cool stadium if they used the old outdoor field, and built a decent stadium around it. with the mountain (hill) behind it, it would make for a pretty loud place, if anybody showed up for the games, of course. the businesses around there would have gotten a big boost, as would have the student union building, since it was pretty close, as was a fair amount of parking, although not enough if they actually had fans. i'm not sure what they do with that field now, if anything, but the setting is, or at least was, nice.

The old field would have been pretty sweet. They use it for soccer and track currently. ISU's campus is so wonky to begin with, for a school of which the community built around, it is really strung out along the edge of the ridge on that eastern edge of town.

The original redo they discussed in 08-10 would have been pretty sweet of Holt, but there were some other constraints that held ISU from embracing it (notably a dumpster fire of an administration and athletic department). Furthermore desire to be beholden to non-college events (rodeo, track, highschool football) for gate really caused some push-back. There was a ton of support for a re-do from the Meador group and Jared Allen, but it never really took off. They've done some superficial changes (locker rooms and athletic department facilities) and the practice field but up until now they've never been able to coalesce enough monetary and community support to renovate Holt.
