great dunk by will bynum last night, the #1 highlight on sportcenter.
mslacat touts kral ferch's dunk as the greatest ever by a player from montana, and i can't argue with that because it was against a national power (st. john's) on the biggest stage (the big dance) over one of the best college players of that year (walter berry.) ferch's dunk also had a signature to it: he cracked his head on the backboard coming down.
for non-montana native dunkers, the competition would have to be between bynum last night and our own matt dhlouy v. boston college. again, dhlouy's was on a bigger stage over one of those b.c. bigs who later went on to play pro ball. i think all the b.c. players were stunned that a white kid on a montana team could elevate like that.
but bynum's dunk is notable not only because it made #1 on sportscenter, it came against the big sky's defensive player of the year, daviin davis, and it clearly changed the momentum of the entire game. bynum was stupid to get a technical, but davis was visibly deflated, as was the entire weber team. weber played real tight after that, so that dunk was a game-changer.
by the way, 99.9999 per cent of the residents of this country don't know the difference between a bobcat and a grizzly anyway. what they will remember is that that uniform read "montana" and so that's good pub for us as well as for the cats. i've always felt the cats benefitted in their football recruiting from our reputation, and this situation is no different for us.
i still think it's short-sighted to root against the cats now. this is wonderful publicity for montana, a great promo for basketball in the state, and something that will only enhance a rivalry that lost a lot when the ferches, damakos, kryskos and popes faded away.
