the intellectual history of the dunk

great dunk by will bynum last night, the #1 highlight on sportcenter.

mslacat touts kral ferch's dunk as the greatest ever by a player from montana, and i can't argue with that because it was against a national power (st. john's) on the biggest stage (the big dance) over one of the best college players of that year (walter berry.) ferch's dunk also had a signature to it: he cracked his head on the backboard coming down.

for non-montana native dunkers, the competition would have to be between bynum last night and our own matt dhlouy v. boston college. again, dhlouy's was on a bigger stage over one of those b.c. bigs who later went on to play pro ball. i think all the b.c. players were stunned that a white kid on a montana team could elevate like that.

but bynum's dunk is notable not only because it made #1 on sportscenter, it came against the big sky's defensive player of the year, daviin davis, and it clearly changed the momentum of the entire game. bynum was stupid to get a technical, but davis was visibly deflated, as was the entire weber team. weber played real tight after that, so that dunk was a game-changer.

by the way, 99.9999 per cent of the residents of this country don't know the difference between a bobcat and a grizzly anyway. what they will remember is that that uniform read "montana" and so that's good pub for us as well as for the cats. i've always felt the cats benefitted in their football recruiting from our reputation, and this situation is no different for us.

i still think it's short-sighted to root against the cats now. this is wonderful publicity for montana, a great promo for basketball in the state, and something that will only enhance a rivalry that lost a lot when the ferches, damakos, kryskos and popes faded away.

I was at the B.C. game, best game dunk I've ever seen in person. I remember actually talking to the announcer of that game earlier that morning in the hotel as we both worked out on treadmills. We had a nice convo about Missoula and the Griz. ...I cracked up when I watched the recorded game a couple days later and that announcer called Matt's dunk a "Dlunky."

P.S.
Dlouhy had a pretty nice dunk against Washington the previous year in the first round.

Yep, I loved that Dlunky.

Where is the intellectual history? I was hoping for some stimulating reading on this board!

Perhaps this topic would be welcome back?

Oh,my! Being seeded 16th, or in the play in game, is hardly a recruiting tool in this day and age. If MSU does get that far, and it is a big if, they will be humiliated by at least 30 points by the #1 seed, providing the coaches let their guys play....The Big Sky Conference loses by MSU being the rep....no winners here.....even the #1, if they don't win by 30, will lose face......MSU sucks.....the Big Sky is the Big Bad Sky this year....

I'm not sure PSU would be that much better. They had a real bad patch in the second half of conference play.

Bynum's dunk was amazing, seeing Davis play for 3 year's I was sure the ball would get swatted. That dunk seemed like a very typical Davis type dunk. WSU fans can't appreciate great dunks since Davis had so many of them over the years.

We will have issues next year with no Davis dunks. I've never seen anyone dunk in college like Davis. He had 55 dunks over his 3 year WSU career.

Here's a clip of Davis in the ESPN top 10 from December dunking on the Mtn West player of the year - 7'2" Luke Nevill.

(3rd clip down)

You also may remember David Patten, the 2007 Big Sky MVP, he had 54 dunks his senior year, a WSU record, and I'm sure Big Sky record. Patten competed in the 2007 ESPN College Slamdunk contest. He represented WSU and the Big Sky well finishing 7th of 8 contestants (and the only white boy there, lol).

Patten had 2 games with 6 or more dunks. 7 on Montana Tech and 6 on I believe NAU.

Included in this video is the famous dunk. In my opinion the best dunk and dunker in BSC history .
