the fallacy of experts

how many times have we heard it, especially from the notorious mega-mouths on this board, "hey, don't criticize the coach. he's the coach. coach knows!" well, here comes the jeremy lin saga to once again disprove this most dubious of arguments.

i mean, how could the warriors, even though they were set at guard, not have seen lin's talent? how is it that one of the greatest qb's ever, joe montana, didn't get drafted until the third round and was rated by scouts behind jack thompson of washington state? or that another great qb, tom brady, wasn't picked until #199 in the sixth round of the draft? or aaron rodgers was taken 26 picks after alex smith? or, on the hometown front, two of the greatest griz players EVER, marc mariani and colt anderson, were not deemed scholarship material out of high school? i'm reminded of the scene in moneyball where the scouts are sitting around and one says, "his wife is ugly." so what does that mean? "he's got bad eyes."

so much for experts. coaches and scouts may have more informed opinions, but they are not infallible. as long as there are phenicies and popes, people will continue to speak their minds.

and, as long as there is a Growler, the board will get a dose of reality to counteract the sugar-fix that occurs on here daily.

The Lakers rejected him, also....sometimes, the position is just not there or has a more known talent..sometimes the chemistry is right...the greatest football player I ever saw was Joe Don Looney at Oklahoma...he was passed over by most teams because, frankly, as great as he was, he was a loser in life...booze, drugs, violent...ended badly....coaches saw that even when fans did not.

Definitely agree that the scouts, coaches and so-called experts are not infallible, and miss talent a lot. Sometimes though it depends a lot on the type of system the player is inserted into. For example, Lin didn't exactly tear it up in the very limited minutes he got before...now he's with New York, and kicking ass. Maybe New York's offense just suits him better..

Same could be said for a lot of players. For example, Terrel Davis (Bronco great running back)... he was a very late round draft pick if I remember right... then rushed for over 2000 yards one season for the Broncos, and was one of the big reasons the Broncos won 2 super bowls (FREAKIN FINALLY!!). How many other teams passed up on drafting him over and over throughout the draft? Would he have been as effective in another system that didn't have the Broncos great offensive linemen? Who knows...

You could even apply that to the Griz last year. Selle, in Hauck's last year, was great! Under the offense we tried to run with Pflu in 2010...he wasn't really doing so well. He didn't all of a sudden lose the talent.. Just different systems get different results from players depending on their strengths and weaknesses.

You state the obvious better than anyone on this board. We are still waiting for you to post anything of relevance.

So your commentary is obviously "hilariously absurd" and you obviously are "pudgy"? This might be your best post yet!

Nice try, and thanks for playin'.

Tinkle did not start Anthony Johnson until one of the players, CET was benched, for a DUI violation. I often wondered what Tinkle saw or didn't see in practice that became obvious in games that Johnson was a unique talent.
