Vigen spent from 1998 to 2013 coaching at North Dakota State where he was a key to building that dynasty. He then moved up to the FBS as the Wyoming OC 2014 to 2020. Now he's the head coach for a very successful FCS program since 2021 and appears ready to take the next step, but hasn't.
Vigen's pay is just over $500k ($295 base + bonuses). For comparison, Jason Eck left Idaho last year for New Mexico where he makes $1.75M. And Eck was very successful leading the Lobos to a 9-3 season and will be getting a P4 offer very soon.
Jay Hill was the HC for Weber State during their competitive days. Took the BYU DC job in 2022 for $1.35M and now makes $2M there. Like Eck, he's also positioned to take a P4 HC job.
Dan Mullens makes $3.5M a year at UNLV and is winning enough to get back into the P4 ranks. Point is there is real money and success at the FBS.
Why Vigen, not even a Montana guy, is still sticking around is baffling. Also troubling is why nobody is poaching any of Bobby's coordinators. You'd think with as much winning as Montana has Bobby would be losing his assistants all the time.
