The Cost of the Loss of Scholarships

When you lose scholarships you are forced to make different decisions than one would normally make.

I understand the loss of Dalton Daum and don't like it. There are many reasons that could have happened. We could have been out-recruited. It could have been lack of a full ride offer
because of the loss of scholarships. It could be because we had to recruit to fill our most immediate needs because of the loss of scholarships and that we feel our receiver depth is good enough to survive one year with no receivers being recruited. The penalty for the lack of scholarships in this case is severe but we have to use our resources to best fit our current needs.

IMO the immediate need for the Griz is depth on the offensive line and depth for the defense which will lose a bunch of key players next year. From the list of early commits this is the areas of emphasis that we are trying to fill. We cannot recruit everyone and if our early commits are as outstanding as they appear to be we should take them as they seem to be the most imperative positions to fill at the present time.

I would guess that we may keep a scholarship available for some super outstanding recruit that may fall into our lap at the last minute be it via drop down transfer, junior college or a player that just fell through the recruiting cracks.

Also difficult to know what the needs are when it's unknown who the coach is and what system they'll be running offensively and defensively.

When do the scholarship sanctions end?
I'm thinking they were instigated for the 2014-15 season, and were for three years. If that is correct, then they should be done with in time for the 2017-18 year.

Awarding schorlorships is always a dilemma, even when you have them all.
I just looked it up and the article I read says it went from 63 to 59, a loss of 4. Gotta be tough to dole em out all right.

It's tough when you have 64, a lot tougher with 59, thanks to RE

I agree that losing 4 is tough, and results in more partials and promises if a kid does well both on the field and in the classroom more help will be on the way in the not-to-distant-future. That's tough when a competing institution is offering a current full-ride and not future promises of more help to come.

Hopefully, mitigating that will be our student-athlete academic center,a huge upcoming upgrade with the construction of a new weight room and lockerroom, and our appearance on ESPN next Aug. as we play NDSU's Bison in the first nationally televised collegiate game of the 2015 season.

I agree with wbtfg: hiring a new coach within the next 2-3 weeks so he can hit the ground running and recruiting before Christmas would really help !!! And another reason to promote Gragg or Gregorak since the schemes on both sides of the ball would largely stay the same and the incoming recruits already know them.

Promote for convenience ? My answer: "NO !"

Ignore the calendar, our competition, the clock ticking on recruiting so that maybe we fill our vacant HC position in late Dec. or just after Jan. 1, 2015: An even more emphatic "NO !"

With the head start that Haslem has, it won't take any longer to find an outside candidate than it would to promote.

Once again, that's not true. A promotion from within could be announced immediately, and Hauck could be hired immediately after an interview, which could happen almost immediately. Not saying this should or will be done, but it could be done that way.

I remember after the 2009 championship game, Pflugrad was named the head coach just 2 weeks after the championship. I'm betting he was hired before the season was even over, or was extremely close to being chosen.
