Reading the articles form Wyoming's paper, it seems clear that we are going to have to think outside of the box. We will never be competitive at the BCS level, even with an example like Boise State. We lack the population and money to make that sort of transition.
But there is going to have to be some changes in college football within the next 10 - 15 years in any event. Why don't we acknowledge that the Alabamas Ohio States, and other major programs are going to become the semi - pro feeders for the NFL. That leaves the middling BCS schools and the top of the FCS schools to get together in a more student athlete oriented program with the bottom feeders of the FCS and D II rounding out the rest.
Let this middle league offer up to 75 scholarships and reorganize around a more regional type basis with a playoff system that actually declares a real champion on the field. This would offer more opportunities for schools to compete since the top feeds of the BCS are unlikely to be replaced. The bottom tier wouldn't have to give scholarships but would be the true essence of what the student athlete is supposed to be about.
The thing about this type of plan is that while the top tier is still going to grab all the national TV attention, the middle tier will be more interesting for the fans who don't live near the Big Dogs and want to enjoy good football. I think these will attract more TV from the equivalents of Root Sports which would allow more revenue. After all, I don't sit glued to the TV when Ohio State is playing unless it's an interesting matchup, but I never miss a televised Griz game if it can at all be helped.
