The coach who replaces Stitt...

What adjustments are the coaches failing to me, other stopping the pass, stopping the other team, giving up fewer points, scoring more points, having less turnovers?

We see reference to adjustments all the time, and the failure of the UM coaches to adjust, but what are they?

How can some fans know that the proper adjustments weren't make, and how can we discuss the potential failure to adjust, if no one can actually point out what adjustments should have been made?

I think the point is that the guys PAID to coach should know what adjustments to make. We the fans don't have to know the answers, but we can certainly see when something is wrong. It's easy to say that, I know. But it's also true.

PR's got a point there. I would be curious to know what those adjustments are. It looked more like the guys got tired and the brakes started to get pumped in the Eastern game, and we started to play catch up, even when we were ahead.

Maybe an adjustment would be less 3 and outs on offense. Like you noted, the defense looked tired against EWU. If the offense would sustain a drive (even if we don't score) and let the defense rest, we could probably get more consistent pressure on their QB.
Outside of one of the picks (which occurred on the 2nd play of the drive) the offense had exactly ONE 3 and put against PSU.

Okay, I don't necessarily agree, but I'm good with your view. Also, I wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing something that others were seeing. The D, while good at times and at key times, has to get better and stop giving up so much yardage and so many big plays on 3d and very long. It's okay if they keep picking off 5 passes a game. I'm good with that.

Agreed the defense has improved, but when we started SO BAD we need A LOT of improvement before we can start winning games against quality opponents. I feel we get exploited for big gains at least once or twice a game. Against PSU it was that called QB draw RIGHT UP THE MIDDLE that resulted in a TD.

A cure for some poor D? Maybe not so many 3 and outs. The offense can put up points, but sometimes the WAY we put up points can actually hurt the defense. Relying on quick strikes to score sets up our defense to be on the field a lot, especially if the alternative to quick points is a quick 3 and out. I honestly wouldn't mind a few long drives that eat up the clock and let the defense rest, and flip the field even if we don't score. At least the defense gets a rest. Just an observation. I totally like the picks from our D....gotta love that!

You realize that EVERY team gets "expoited" for big gains once or twice a game? That, in and of itself, doesn't mean we have a poor defense. And they grounded and pounded PSU's defense at will for most of the game...wonder where all the people bitching that Stitt's offense could never do that disappeared to?

Hey, that's something I didn't know. Thanks for the clarification. That being said, PSU is not the best team for us to judge defensive success against. Obviously I don't know the stats, but I would be curious as to the number of 3 and outs against EWU. Also, WHEN they happen is important too. My point is the offensive play calling seems to hurt the defense at times. Yes, we are running lots of plays-but does that put strain on our defense when we go 3 and out (especially against a quality opponent)? My gut is that 3 and outs hurt us more than most teams. But I don't know the exact stats. Let's commission a study to review 3 and outs over Stitts tenure and see how they stack up. Specifically, when do they happen in the game, what is the game situation (are we winning? winning by a lot, by a little?), and does the other team score soon after a 3 and out? I'll let Royce chose who gets to be on this committee, I'm sure he will pay them accordingly.

And a 5 and out. And failed to get TD's after 2 of the picks. And the 3 and out was at the start of the 2d half. And the D stopped PSU after both of the UM picks, including one with a 3 and out. And the D got 2 more picks on 2-pt conversion attempts. But, this is about the O, I guess.

Yes, the Griz ran the ball fairly well. I liked that. 48 for 170 for 3.5 carry. By contrast, PSU had 46 for 295 for 6.4 per carry.

 yes, it is. GET OFF MY LAWN!!

Don Read was at UM nine years. Yes, in his third year, he got to the playoffs (maybe 1st time, ever). Same, next year. Next 3 years, no dice. His last 3 years, he got to the playoffs, culminating in the '95 championship. My point is: Read had his ups & downs w/ this team too, and I speculate that plenty of eGrizzers would have been crying for his scalp, even then, if there had been an eGriz. I still think the new WaGriz stadium had a lot to do w/ it.

Stitt win average was about a 63% at the School of Mines..sounds about right for what his average for the Griz will be!

Sure, because the situations are so similar and no coach has ever had his winning percentage change when changing jobs.

I agree that Stitt has ben under intense judgment, but there was a lot of hype with the hire. He's waiting too long to make the changes you mentioned. Have I not complimented Stitt's offense? Have I not complimented his recruiting? If he makes a change at DC, I think he should get more time.

Montana should be a premiere FCS power, it's been over two years... How long do we expect him to be on a steep learning curve?

BTW, I appreciate the work you do on recruiting threads. Solid stuff.

Thanks, Realistically 4 years will determine if he is the guy.

Really ! 4 years . The only thing he has going for him is his recruiting.
A good coach will take the talent he has and use it to the best of their ability. I have not seen this .
A good coach will motivate his team . I gave not seen this
I will say this again . Stitt is well respected by his peers for being an offensive genius, I get it but I really doubt his ability has a head coach .
And 4 years that's a load of crap .In my line of work I pay above a living wage and I expect you to know what you are doing . If not your down the road . Those that don't usually are gone in a matter of a day or two if not hours . They only way they are around for 4 years if they are an apprentice .
Yes 4 years... one full recruiting cycle. That is what most coaches and ADs will tell you.

A

I agree with the Fonz.

Yes I understand your sentiment. I also think we are exploited too easily. Too many third and longs that turn into first downs. Too many long qb runs. It will kill us against quality teams. PSU is not a quality team. ISU, Weber, and msu will have their way with us the way our defense has performed so far. Hope I'm wrong, time will tell.

Yup, I agree with your first stuff, but think PSU is a quality team and don't view ISU or MSU as being any or much better. Maybe Weber. Their D is tough.

Of course they're not a quality team. we beat them.

This egriz phenomenon is truly amazing.
