The Answer To Funding A "Move Up"

I just HAD to go there only days before the first kickoff, didn't I? :-)

Check out the beer policy at the new Husky Stadium here in Seattle: http://blog.seattlepi.com/seattlesports/2014/08/20/beer-to-be-sold-at-husky-stadium-but-not-to-everyone/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And note this story about the small number of schools tinkering with alcohol sales at NCAA events and just how much they're raising: http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/headlines/20130323-horn-even-in-cash-hungry-world-of-college-football-beer-is-one-potential-revenue-stream-most-schools-won-t-tap.ece" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So, OK, my thread title is dumb, and not even the point. But these articles DO have an interesting topic: Beer sales at NCAA football games.

Here in Seattle, the new stadium has a special area that requires a special ticket to get into. And in this seating area only, they'll be selling beer.

The article notes that there is "no blanket policy" in the NCAA or the Pac-whatever regarding alcohol sales at stadiums. And that the left coast schools have a more liberal attitude about alcohol sales at stadiums than East Coast schools (please, spare me the politics tangents and keep reading)..

So, seriously, folks, can you IMAGINE a special section like this at Washington Read Stadium (yeah, I'm still on that kick)? And if you can, what does your imagination show you?

Personally, I would sorta like to see a pay-to-drink section, especially if it had high-quality, local beers on tap, not just crap from InBev companies or MolsonCoors. I would also couple it with a denial of re-entry for people who left at half-time (that might require a pretty big pay-to-drink section!). And imagine the money UM would raise selling beer at Griz games. I'm sure there would be howls of indignation from those who just have to run out and tank up on their favored anti-freeze for the second half, but I would actually kind of like to see it. I think they'd make BUNDLES of dough and could use it for all sorts of athletics department or entire-school purposes. I bet it would provide a little bit of control over the consumption of booze and possibly reduce fighting or fan outbursts, too. That's not a bad thing, although I'll confess the last game I attended, I didn't see too many dumbass drunks who got out of hand.

What's something like a pay-to-drink section look like in your imagination?

BTW... No, I'm not advocating for a move up. And, no, I don't really think it would fund a move up regardless. It was a title to get your attention and your groans. But if West Virginia makes $500K and they seat 15K people more than the WaRead Stadium, I bet the money would be around $300K at UM. That's nothing to scoff at is it?

I say drink up. The U is already selling, and therefore condoning, alcohol sales at the GSA tailgate area and drinks flow in the President's private suite so why not expand the program and make even more money. I do think they would be wise to stick with their large corporate sponsors that currently provide the beer, but that is just good business. I'm sure the administration and athletic department officials could come up with consistent and fair policies regarding the alcohol sales. Any additional revenue would certainiy help.

Alcohol sales aren't going to fund a move up, but alcohol sales at college events are becoming more prevalent and such sales are a partial answer to increased revenue. I think more schools will move in that direction. UM should probably look at it. I'm not sure UM has the ideal leadership to do it now, though. Engstrom has apparently been more inclined to limit alcohol--and tailgating--than increase it. Haslam is LDS and doesn't drink, but I don't know his views on alcohol or alcohol sales. As pointed out, there is already alcohol sold at the GSA tailgate, and alcohol in the presdident's suite and the other suites. In addition, the Canyon Club sells alcohol, which at games must be consumed in the Club or on the the various decks/terraces around the Club, and not in the seats. The Canyon Club and its decks/terraces are pretty fun during games, and include good mingling. Season ticket costs for Club tickets are $1,000 outside, and $1500 inside. Domestic beers were $7 for the McCartney concert, and they could be consumed outside in the seats. Don't recall what football prices are. At games, there is seat/table service inside and on the decks/terraces.

This is likely an idea that needs to be at least considered, reviewed, and vetted as an option for increased revenues to aid funding facility improvements. BTW it is WaGriz Stadium not the names bolded. :)

On a larger note with alcohol and college sports it might be time to investigate the 21 year old drinking age. I know how proud most of you guys are of your military, and absolutely rightly so. It seems kind of strange that a 20 year old soldier can put themselves in harms way but can't have a beer to toast their fallen comrades afterward. I know this has exactly shit to do with football but maybe limiting alcohol at college events has something to do with most of the students being too young to legally drink.

Personally, I think Dick Cheney and Hillary Clinton should send themselves off to war.
