Team talent level on a scale from 1-10

8 prior to Gresch's departure; 6 now.

What about now since Hauck has recruited every relative of his that is college (and high-school) age? Sure, this Gresch guy may have left, but Bobby is bringing in several kin that are surely better, right?

what is the scale?
1-5 too weak to compete for Big Sky Title
6-8 competitive in Big Sky and possible play off team
9-10 top tier favorite to win Big Sky and compete for NC

Just a thought

6.5 right now, could improve with transfers/depth, could sink with more departures.

Edit: breaking it down like Rural Juror did above:

QB: 6 - If Sneed keeps improving we'll be fine, no depth right now
RB: 7 - Good group but no one guy that can shoulder the workload
WR: 9 - Awesome talent, maybe best group of players we have
TE: 6.5 - Bingham's going to be great, everyone else is a 1st year convert
OL: 6 - Starting 5 I like, 2 or 3 in depth can help, very inexperienced

Offense overall: 7

DL: 7.5 - Interior DL could be the best we've seen in over a decade, need Edge guys to step up
LB: 6.5 - More unknowns beyond Buss
CB: 4 - has the size & speed, almost all lack good experience outside of Nash
S: 8 - maybe a sugar coater/homer pick but I like this group a lot

Defense overall: 6.5

K/P: 8 - we're in good shape here

ST groups: 6 - I expect improvement but there's going to be reliance on a lot of untested guys

This is close to what I'd guess. I'd grade LB at a 7.5 and S at a 7. I really like the talent of those unknowns at LB. Safety play could be good if Sandry stays healthy. Not a lot of depth though.

Talent level = 7
Coaching = 8

BH was way to jovial during the spring game. Of course that was before GJ announced his transfer, but BH had to see something that pleased him. His demeanor has obviously changed over time and he appears to have matured as a coach. Still, I would think he would have been much more involved and focused for the entirety of the spring game if he felt this teams potential and skills were so poor. A couple of transfers perhaps this summer and this team hopefully makes the playoffs.

I take Hauck @ his word when he says he thinks spring football is important. Would it be prudent to assume that this version was this go-round was about seeing what they had to work with & getting his processes & culture installed? Though not without a boatload of drama, I think they accomplished what they set out to do. They have and idea of what they have to work with, an even better idea of what is need to fill in the gaps & the players know what to plan for.

I also think he’s being realistic saying it will take a couple of years to RTD, not just go 7-4 & finish 6th in the conference.

This is off what talent we will put on the field in fall:
QB: 7 possibly higher (we will get a drop down, not really worried)
RB: 8 this group is not getting the credit they deserve. we don't need one back to carry the ball 25 times, we have 4 guys all able to get 10 carries if needed.
WR: 9 easily the best group we have, really good depth and versatility
TE: 7 We will be decent here, we have enough talent at this position to be confident that they will be an asset.
OL: 6 possibly higher. We will have a high talent 5 starters but unproven. depth will be a question
Overall Offense: 7.4

DL: 8 This is a solid group, tons of talent and great rotational depth
LB: 8 Whoever thinks we don't have talent at LB is not paying attention, Buss is gonna lead this group and they are gonna play well
CB: 6 Depth is iffy and unproven. They have size and speed but can they be coached up? we had talent last 2 years and never played up to potential.
S: 7 Safety is one of those positions that we actually now look good at that we looked bad at before...barring Hauck's ability to play.
Defense overall: 7.25

K: 8 Solid kicking group we have this year, should be a decent year for them
P: 8 Should be a great punter, could be a 9 if he can maintain the height on his punts
KR: 8 Should be much improved over the last few years. BH specialty and have 4-5 guys all with talent to do this job
ST overall: 8

Overall I expect this team to have a 7.5 ish range for talent and production. That in Montana standards should be competing in the BSC and making the playoffs. This is not a top 5 team but if CB,QB,OL play better than expected...which they could....we could see an over performing team. We could also see a struggle with execution of a new system, but I doubt it. I see us in a 8-3 type season.

Hauck will coach up any area's in need. I'm very excited to see the product put on the field. He has said this many times. "We will put the best 11 on the field." Going to be fun to watch.

In their latest crash tests, Consumer Reports rated our talent level as a "3." However, they rated our coaching ability at a "10+." And they commented positively on the ease of handling, especially on tight turns.
