I agree Pflu was on the cusp of something special. Smart guy with great offensive mind. I always felt he tried to put his in offense in too quickly (the first year) with Hauck recruits that were accustomed to grind in out. Should have phased it in. Pflu would be my first choice and no, i dont think he would set us back a bit.
http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/press-releases/montana-failed-monitor-football-program
"The former head coach failed to monitor the football program by not reporting the booster activity surrounding the arrest of the two student-athletes, not monitoring the relationships between boosters and student-athletes and allowing a student assistant to engage in coaching activity."
Why is it the coach's job, as opposed to the compliance department and athletic department, to monitor 2 of those 3 things?
Booster activity? Neither Pflu nor anyone else in the athletic department even knew the couples providing meals in their home. It would be impossible for the coach or anyone to monitor that.
The compliance officer, i.e. Gee, and others in the athletic dept., knew of the mom bailing out the 2 guys late one night, at the request of the grandpa of one who lived in CA, and that she was repaid the several hundred dollars without a week. The compliance officer, i.e. Gee, and others in the athletic dept. knew who was representing the players. It was their job to monitor those things, not the head coach. It looks to me that Gee and Engstrom just pointed the finger at Pflu because he was gone and unable to participate in the investigation and know what was going on.
The student assistant was a college kid who helped with video for the team. He never even played college football for UM or anywhere. What he was allowed to do related to coaching was virtually nothing. What coaching value can you even get from a college kid dong video who hasn't even played college football? Answer: zero. Another BS charge that Gee and Engstrom, and their inexperienced counsel, failed to defend.
Do any of you really think that what Pflu did, or didn't do, was "failure to monitor" and should have resulted in a level 2 violation? By the way, the athletic dept. was also cited in these matters, not just the coach.
