Outfielder Matt Szczur and righty Jordan Lyles will be part of the Padres’ Opening Day roster, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com tweets. The out-of-options Szczur, 28, will continue to provide outfield depth in San Diego after coming over in a trade with the Cubs last summer.

He went to Villanova because they had baseball and football, Villanova allowed him to play both. The only school to do that, damn. The reason he chooses 'Nova.

Szczur contributed dramatically to our loss, but our linebacker, Shaw, let their tight end get behind him in the end zone for the score that spelled defeat for the GRIZ.

Wish we could find our own Szczur...

Bobby? You listening?

Bobby remembers him well.

Szczur was a great college player. He was very versatile in that he was primarily a receiver who returned kicks & ran as a wildcat QB. You may have forgotten that Bobby “found” Mariani & Reynolds. I think he’ll figure out something from among the guys he has.

The one man wrecking crew against our Griz in their last chipper. That guy was literally unstoppable.

..yes they found a weakness in the Griz D and hammer it but the following year EWU put the squeeze
to Szczur(sp) and he ended up with a concussion... l believe than he realize he was more cut out for
baseball than football!

Yep, EWU proved that he was not the pure "dominator" we all convinced our selves he was, and confirmed my thoughts that Bobby made another monster mistake, besides forgetting that Mariani was on the team, by not focusing the D on him for that last series.

BH did not forget "that Mariani was on the team". He was double-covered like a blanket the second half and the decisions to not try to force passes to him was more on Selle's reads than anything to do with BH. Our inability to make adjustments to contain their wildcat is what beat us. They controlled the ball and kept it away from us in the second half. They were a very good team; we caught them off guard the first half, but they were able to adjust to take key elements (e.g., Mariani) away from us.

Hauck attributed the loss to not stopping the run - Szczur & Whitney had a little over 220 rushing yds, Szczur running for much of it out of the wildcat formation. Mariani 178 before the half. Sambrano caught a 50 yarder to get within 2.

Here’s the problem, Selle was 12-35 & Mariani had 9 of those by the half. Villanova seemed to have a better pass rush after the half, & there wasn’t much in the way of adjustments from Hauck after the half. A wet ball also caused Larsen to throw a pass that could have been a 30 yard field goal on the opening drive. Man to man or otherwise I can’t believe Mariani wasn’t open @ all after the half.

..as much as l am a supporter of Bobby l thought he went conservative with the adjustments and it cost him..Villanova find the week side of the D and put the screws to the Griz..in many ways l thought Bobby was posturing himself for the FBS...we don't have to worry about that anymore..I think?

His DC never showed a lot of adjustment capability. Same old bend, don't break - except in NC games, when in the second halves, it did break.

Villanova scored 14 after the half.

& my apologies to Selle, I went back to the official stats & he was 27 of 35. A great game by any standard. Not being able to manufacture a running game, 15 tries for 64 yards, or stop one, 350 yards, was a tough pill to swallow. I don’t think Bobby will have forgotten that lesson, which is why I think he has all the focus in the world on the big guys up front.

The Montana defense could not get itself off the field in the second half. Nova doubled us in TOP, 19:43 to 10:17. Montana kept trying to hold onto that slim lead, making no adjustments, and it didn't hold up. Nova did a great job of denying Selle and crew the ball.

It was pretty much the same story in the '04 NC game with JMU. In both games, we should have scored more in the first half and put their grinding run game away.
