Surprisingly Low Viewership for MSU/UC Davis on ESPNU

Interesting Sam Herder tweet I came across mentioned the viewership this morning:
https://twitter.com/samherderfcs/status/1577688558508318724?s=46&t=qWrU4sJbSiN6_U5jDHT7fQ

Couple of factors to call out:
1) DishNetwork cut Disney Broadcasts including ESPNU on Saturday
2) Last years ESPNU game between Weber and MSU occurred on a Friday.

I'm not surprised. If you can't at least make it onto ESPN2, you're gonna get numbers like that. Plus it was a 9pm kick, and there was a game on right before that that blocked off the entire 1st quarter, and it doesn't help that DISH and Sling both lost ESPN because of negotiations that night, similar to what happened with Youtube TV last year in the playoffs.

I don't think UC-D did anything for those stats either...bet the 30,000 was almost all Montana folks.

It will be interesting to see what the viewership for Montana/Sacramento State will be in a couple of weeks on ESPN2.

The only negative that I can see hurting viewership numbers for that matchup is the late start... 8:00 PM PT / 9:00 PM MT means an 11PM start on the east coast...

I hate extremely late kickoffs.

How was this “surprisingly”? I don’t get it. Nobody cares because bobcats suck. The O has always been boring and now their D can’t fight it’s way out of a wet paper bag.

Their separate stadias are not united and cannot generate any energy at all. Bubcat nation screwed up their best opportunity and embarrassed all of MT.

ESPN realized it immediately and therefore did not switch over from the prior game to purposely prolong the inevitable drop in viewership. Once espn could not hold out any longer and was forced to broadcast from Reno’s For Sale field, viewers took one look at that dump and the trash on the field and almost broke their wrist trying to change the channel. ESPN will never make this mistake again, nor make another dumb decision to air that crap.

 that's cute!

Well, boobcat stadium has a very high school feel, what with all the cowbell and such, so it’s understandable if people just did a quick scan and decided it wasn’t worth watching. Most people probably flipped the channel once they saw there was nothing but a no consequence high school game on.

100% truth. Every. Word.

Here’s the thing. 30k viewers is such a super horrible number, it blows my mind. It’s so low, it’s almost unmeasurable.

Once you subtract out the botz, hackers, and nerdy super fans watching from the stadias, you are basically left with a couple dozen TVs that got accidentally left on, mostly places where they simply cannot change the channel like an old person’s home.

Until shown otherwise, this was literally the worst rated football game to be broadcast over a motion picture screen. Seriously, I challenge you to find a lower rated FB game from anywhere, anytime. I guarantee you cannot because nobody would be dumb enough to report the rating, just like how ESPN tried to keep it quiet

The biggest factor other than the late start time is if Dish TV settles their differences with ESPN. Dish did not carry the ESPN channels for the Cat game. Besides individual Dish customers, it eliminated many sports bars that use Dish. The late start time can further hurt viewing if their is a previous game that runs over into the Griz game like what happened to the Cats.

I think these two factors were major in the kittie case, especially the late start. Folks in the Eastern Time Zone are not likely to stay up to watch two teams they know nothing about. The game that ran over – Cincinnati at Tulsa – was not between contenders, so it wouldn't even deliver a good carry-over audience.

We were set to record, but we found that we had most of the last quarter of the Cincy-Tulsa game to go when the Bozeman game was supposed to start. We stuck with it just to get a look at both teams. That probably would not hold for many fans in the Mountain West and on the coast who might have been vaguely interested. They'd bounce over and find a rather boring game between two BCS non-contenders, and probably say, "Screw it, let's watch a movie."

I'm actually surprised that the number is that low, considering the out-of-state scat fans and those who didn't go to the game also apparently didn't stay up and watch it. Even with Dish Network and Sling not showing ESPN, 30K is an unbelievably low number for viewership to a national audience.

Well I have Dish and was blacked out but I just went to my ClearChoice streaming service (use mostly for NFL games) & found it there!

100% Truth, just like everything your Imaginary Best Friend Cat Fan Neighbor tells you.
Nope, the bubcat neighbors are not imaginary at all (I wish they were) and the husband is certainly not my best friend. Neighbors are kind of like family—you have to find a way to live with them.

I’m convinced the neighbors would not survive 10mins out there without me nearby. We kind of live out in the stix and I am constantly plowing them out, pulling them out of the ditch, etc. Last week I watched him change his oil (which in and of itself was really pathetic) and he could not understand the concept of catching the draining oil and recycling it. He literally just lets it drain into the field. So gross. Nothing grows there.

The other day their dog got stuck on the garage roof. Apparently, it climbed up this heap of firewood and jumped onto the roof. I previously told the guy that mess along side the garage was a dangerous rodent paradise, but he never listens. They couldn’t get the dog down with their ladder so they asked me to set up my scaffolding. Took like 3.5 hours. Oh yeah, and the neighbor is scared of heights so I was the one who had to wrestle the mutt down from the roof. Guarantee it happens again and I’m not going to have anything to do with that shitshow next time.

If that is indeed true I’d have told that “neighbor” to pound sand a looooooong time ago. There are givers and takers in this world, and he’s definitely a “taker”. Cut him off, GA.

A contributing factor to the low viewership could also be contributed to the fact that viewers on Dish and Sling were not able to watch the game due to the expiration of their ESPN contract and sale negotiations that never got resolved until after that weekend. ESPN was a total blackout for those viewers.

Totally true. I slipped the bubson $5 bucks to climb up there and flatten the woodpile down so the mutt could not make the leap of faith again. Guarantee the clueless neighbor did not even notice and will continue piling wood up there again.

My wife has said the same thing as you, AZ. She tells me to ignore the neighbor’s calls, but I have such a bleeding heart for helpless and lost pet projects.

Another time, the neighbor ate up a whole Sunday of mine while he borrowed my drip torch and needed help doing a prescribed burn on their field. That’s a whole ‘nother story that may need its own thread, but the evidence in the police report confirmed the neighbor’s lunacy is as real as a donut.

NOT surprisingly low viewership numbers at all.

Just I myself know of many people, including me, that went tune into the game at kickoff and found out that we had lost the channel (Sling, Dish) and couldn't view the game.

Always love a great OUATIH reference. Probably in my top 5 favorite movies. Well done.
