Super Dave and Johnny Montana

I have been following the Super Dave vs. Johnny Montana discussion on one of the other threads and I have a question for you all in regards to that discussion. First of all I want to say that John is an incredible winner and so was Dave. As a quarterback I think Dave is the better of the two, the things he did was just impossible and he always pulled it off. I have to admit that two years ago when John came in to replace the injured Drew Miller I thought we had the makings of an absolutely amazing quarterback and he is.

Now on to the question, if Johnny Montana leads this team to another National Championship this year should his number be retired? That would be back to back championships for John and only one championship for Dave. Or would John have to also win the Payton Award to get his number retired?

Cad... great question...

I think in order for John to have his number retired, he'd have to have beaten some of Daves passing records, win the Natl.Championship again, and win the Walter Payton... And that simply isn't going to happen. Sorry John.

I wonder why they never thought about retiring Yo's number? In Yo's case, I think one of these new young bucks (mainly Gober) will surpass his yardage by his junior year.

There are close to a hundred players on a college football team. I think the Griz have around 90 players. So to retire a number means one less jersey number to go around for the team. You retire too many and you will have a bunch of 63's running around out there!

Ok....I would think that John would be considered for jersey retirement if we win the NC again this year. However, let me ask this. If Brandon Niell was the starter, would we still have a chance to win the NC? I say yes. I don't think we would drop of at the QB spot with Niell in there. (REMEMBER...had it not been for Brandon last year against NWST , there would have been no NC)

So the question is, if you believe we could get the job done with Niell, what makes the Griz a Championship type team? I think that it is a combo of a lot of factors, but the biggest slice of the pie, on a pie chart, would be the Defense. Our D is our bread and butter. When Dave played, our O was the bread and butter.

Also, if you retire John's number because he won two NC's as the QB....then you would have to do that for any QB to accomplish that again in histroy...which I hope will be the case a few more times before I become compost in some fancy grave yard. :D

So, I would say no on retiring John's number.....but I sure would be happy for him if they did. They are building the new hall of fame....they may want an extra jersey to hang-up in it.....who knows.

John is a great QB, He's just not on the same level as Dave. Hakeem Olajuwon was a great player who lead his team to back to back titles, but he was not on the same planet as MJ.

Geaux, those are interesting points but I am going to play devil's advocate here and see if I can make a valid arguement. As to the point of retiring too many numbers, I am sure there are other teams out there that have more numbers retired than the Griz and they are sill able to field a football team so I am not too worried about that.

Now on to the Brandon Neil issue, very good point, he too is an excellent quarterback that would probably do a fine job of leading the team to the promised land but isn't going to get much of a chance to shine. I was at last years ISU game in Pocatello and saw the fantastic job he did in relief of Edwards. I can't dispute you on this one.

I also can't dispute you on the fact that the D is the main focus on this run to the NC. Whereas in years past it has been to make sure our O could put up more points than the opponents O. So another good point, I am doing a terrible job at devil's advocate.

The analogy of Hakeem to MJ... this is going to be fun. Ok, say that Dave is the Griz equivalent to MJ and Edwards is the Griz equivalent to Hakeem. Ok, no problems there, Hakeem is retiring in a couple weeks and there is no way that the Houston Rockets will not retire his number and send him hanging in the rafters with the other numbers. There is also no way that he is not a first ballot hall of fame inductee. I am not a fan of Hakeem but he was a good player that just happened to get his back to back championships while MJ was playing baseball. But that isn't going to take away from his chances at being immortalized by the Rockets and the hall of fame. Here is another one, I can't stand Charles Barkley and he NEVER won a championship but he will be a first ballot inductee to the hall of fame. So with that in mind we can't base the decision to retire a number on championships alone there has to be more as with the case of Dave and I think there is more with John but is there enough?

GoodGodGriz, I thought Yo's number should have been retired and I don't think Gober will even snif Yo's yardage total in his whole career. I hope I am wrong about that because I would love to have another stud running back to follow right behind Yo but so far I am not seeing it.

Cad

The thing with the football #'s being retired and having a bunch of 63's running around was a joke. But now that I think of it.....because there are so many football players on a team, it is an issue. I'll bet that football has the least amount of retired jeresys of all the major sports. Making it by the numbers(pun) one of the hardest sports to have your jeresy # retired in. Should John be in that select group?

As long as you're nominating people for jersey retirement, I'd like to throw Tim Hauck into the discussion. Tim was without a doubt the first super star of the Washington-Grizzly Stadium era of UM Football and I think he was the spring-board for the popularity the Griz enjoy now. He was the most electric defensive player I've ever seen. Every play held the possibility for a thunderous hit, every punt, field goal or PAT was in serious jeopardy of being blocked by "Hitter."

Tim Hauck was a fantastic player and I agree he should be honored but if I remember right didn't Tim wear #37? There is just no way that anyone that wears #37 could have his number retired, they get honored in knowing that they are the "Designated Hitter" while they are playing. Again I am not positive but wasn't Tim the first Montanan to start that tradition?

Correct CAD... it was Hauck that started the tradition... you get a Scooby Snack...

For the Million Dollar Question... who did he pass his jersey down to ??

Dang, I am not sure I can get that one was it Crebo or was there one player in between Crebo and Hauck?

No, Crebo isn't right, I think I know who it is, last name start with an E? But I won't say, so other people can see if they guessed right. Or am I still wrong?

Boy, do I get the Bonehead of the Week Award or what? Yeah, the guy he passed it down to did start with and E and he was from Butte, America.

I know it... but I'm gonna make someone put it on there besides me...

I need to get a freakin life and get away from Egriz for a while.... lol.

Hint though... First name is TODD.

Easy one....Todd Erickson, who went on to play for the Colts. Owned the GolfUSA shop in Butte afterwards. So who followed Todd?????
