Well didn't he play safety then in High School? Hauck talked about both Pierson and Nguyen as two types of players that don't fit what he recuits in their positions but possess athletic qualities that were too good to pass over.

I remember Hauck saying that Clay was the fastest safety he had ever recruited to Montana. Don't know how accurate he was on that. Can't deny the kids athletic ability though. He's always had the frame to add on more pounds and play a DE or TE position and not lose much in terms of speed or agility. I think he has the potential to be a very good TE for us as he learns to catch the ball in traffic, use his body to shield himself open, and block the edge. Definitely a role for him in the offense.

Clay was a kid coming from a Class C high school who had as much athletic ability as any kid we have recruited from Montana in many years. He had some crazy leaping ability, and raw athleticism. Many people who saw him play thought he was good enough to play at a higher level if he had attended a bigger high school and played against better competition.

He has just never shown that same ability while in college, possibly because he seems be a player without a position. Hopefully we will put him into a position where he may blossom into the kind of player we thought he would become.

Thinking along the lines of how Kevin Klaboe was; about the same size. Perhaps at times, a TE, in the backfield, H-back, etc. Like to see it work out. Definitely one with potential there.
