Strong, Sims, and Other "Back Ups"

I put "back ups" in parentheses on purpose, as guys like Strong, Sims, and even Sprunk didn't look or play like back ups. That is some serious depth. Rewatching the game today, Strong had an awesome game. He attacks the run game, almost with wreckless abandon. He was sound in pass coverage as well.

Then Sims was also incredible. He is probably outweighed by 30-40 lbs yet still exerted his strength and dominance all game long. He looked great.

Then Sprunk came in for Weyer and did a good job with snaps and opening up some running lanes. Granted the defense for SFU may have been a bit gassed by then.

My question is, how do you keep guys like this off the field. Or does Semore find creative ways to keep them on?

Strong was very good in pass defense and run defense. I saw him not get into position to make a possible tackle on a sweep in the first half in front of the UM bench, when the runner cut well ahead of him. He also got the penalty after his great tackle for loss around the 10. Even with Sanders coming back, he'll get alot of playing time. Don't know if he can play both safety positions. Alot of safeties got playing time yesterday. The coaches have confidence in a bunch of the safeties. The depth appears to be significant.

Sims will be significantly in the rotation no matter what. Thought Sprunk played well, but don't really watch the o-line or know how to evaluate it.

But, you played the game. Sorry PR, but you set yourself up for that. I could not resist. :thumb:

Based on how Strong played, I would like to see Semore be creative again some wide-open Big Sky teams like Eastern Washington and he use him as a hybrid LB/safety. This will give them a lot of flexibility in nickel personnel against the run and pass in place of an outside linebacker like Banks.

No worries there. Semore's 2 strengths are creativity and aggressiveness. His defenses are so much more difficult to read. Cannot wait to see all the wrinkles he has come playoff time. :thumb:
