Strength of Schedule

Prior to the season we were all lamenting the difficulty of the Griz 2015 schedule. As the season progresses, that strength of schedule is withering away. So far our opponents have a combined 17-22 record.

NDSU 4-2
CPSLO 2-4
Liberty 3-4
NAU 3-3
UCD 1-6
Weber 4-3

The only thing certain about college football is that nothing is certain. Just ask Michigan....

To be fair, 7 of those games were against FBS foes, and 3 more were against NDSU. Eliminating UCD (who nobody thought would be good), I'll take that SOS.

4 of 6 ranked when we played them, Weber could move in to being ranked with another win or two...

Add in we've got games against ranked or near top 25 teams in PSU, EWU, and MSU still, as well as UND who was ranked but is tumbling fast.

It's a tougher schedule but it is what is. On the flip side there's MSU who appeared to have a cupcake schedule and everyone was assuming they'd have 1 loss to EWU come the time of the brawl but now have 3 losses...

Facts are stubborn things. It remains that our current opponents are a combined 17-22 and our .500 record didn't really distort that. How many of these six will be ranked this week? Probably only NDSU, and not so high.

seems to be a pretty difficult schedule for the Griz despite their combined records....that happens when you are a mediocre team...and if you really want to get down to the status of the BSC...how difficult are everyone else's schedule?.....

Kem isn't hung up on anything. Did nothing but present a few facts - facts that you must not like.

Ursa doesn't believe that Kem is hung up on preseason assumptions. Ursa believes Kem is hung up on referring to himself in the third person. Ursa thinks that's pretty awesome!

I have no problem with the facts...when a team isn't more than average, it doesn't need the most difficult schedule to struggle to win games...

When do you measure the SOS? When you play a team or when the season is over?

Either way, it doesn't make the Griz look good if the teams they've played end up looking like they're marginal.....It downgrades the nice wins and the close losses.....

A few followup questions:
- what difference does it make right now?
- how does it affect the team's chances of getting into the post-season playoffs?
- do the results of our opponents make the wins or the losses, more or less satisfying, to Griz fans?

Inquiring minds want to know :!:

Good point. With the way the Griz are playing right now, the strength of their schedule is some what irrelevant. They just need to string a couple of wins together....

One game @ a time folks. If we win them all, we might have a shot @ wacking San Diego before the total collapse in 2016. I heard it on the Internet... Save SOS for the end of the regular season.

SOS does not equal the records of the teams played. FCS teams tend to have poorer records early because, as pointed out, they play FBS schools early. Also, at the end of the season, the average won-loss record of all teams is roughly 50%. Win-loss record record of opponents is usually quite misleading. On the other hand, the win-loss record is relevant to some extent.

Just because a team is ranked when you play them does not mean they are good overall. So of the 6 teams how many will go to the playoffs??? My guess is 1... Liberty plays the team that will be good next year and will take over coastal carolina as the team to beat in that coference in 1-2 years MAX Kennesaw state

They also tend to play DII and NAIA teams early in the season.
