MBBALL Stopped by the Badger Board

After reading the comments on the Badger board we might just as well call in another 30 point loss. One Badger fan said our defense was “horrendous” another fan thought we were Montana St. and pretty much the rest of them were looking forward to playing BYU in round 2. Ken Pom said we’re the worst team not a 16. We’ve become the Rodney Dangerfield of college basketball, we don’t get no respect. I hope some of their comments make it to the bulletin board.
Are the Badgers bigger, faster, stronger, no doubt, but it’s still 5 against 5 and I tend to think our 5 are pretty good too. As 17.5 pt. underdogs the prognosticators are probably right. But never, ever count a Grizzly out. It ain’t over till the fat lady sings.
GO GRIZ

I honestly don't think players look at fan message boards.

Sounds about like eGriz during the first round of the FCS football playoffs...
Or any 3 vs. 14 really.

But not everyone feels that way. ESPN put our tournament ceiling as "Sweet 16", while the remainder of the 14s are either round one or the round of 32. So it's clear they believe we can compete. The issue for the GRIZ -- beyond having to beat a great Wisconsin team, of course -- is that if they manage to do that, they have to face the hottest team in the tournament and one many believe can reach the Elite Eight in BYU in order to reach that ceiling.

There are a lot of built in advantages for Montana with it being in Denver early on Thursday. Imagine what the line would be if we were playing Wisconsin in Milwaukee on Friday in a similar 14 v 3 matchup.
Agreed. I think where the GRIZ were placed speaks volumes about how the committee views the GRIZ. Clearly they couldn't seed us a 13 based on metrics, but I think this is a nod to the fact that the committee rightly sees that GRIZ are playing more like a 12 than a 14.

As an aside, I've had some bubs text me all bent out of shape about the GRIZ being placed in Denver. Man, that team should really change their primary color to green to reflect their non-ending GRIZ envy.

No. 14 Montana over No. 3 Wisconsin: The Badgers just made it to the Big Ten title game, but they're No. 152 in KenPom's adjusted tempo ratings, meaning they could find themselves in a 55-54 game against the Grizzlies and be the first upset of the day Thursday. — Jeff Patterson

From CBSSports

"The third matchup to watch in the East Region features No. 3 seed Wisconsin vs. No. 14 seed Montana. The Badgers have been prone to upsets in recent NCAA Tournaments under head coach Greg Gard as Wisconsin is 1-3 against double-digit seeds over its last four NCAA Tournaments dating back to 2019, including losing a 5 vs. 12 matchup against James Madison last year. In 2022, Wisconsin won its first-round matchup as a No. 3 seed before losing to No. 11 seed Iowa State in the second round and missing the 2023 NCAA Tournament. The Badgers are coming off a 59-53 loss to Michigan in the Big Ten Championship Game despite entering as 3.5-point favorites. Meanwhile, Montana has won 14 of 15 games as the Big Sky champions and have the third-best shooting percentage (49.6%) in the nation, putting Wisconsin on potential upset alert yet again."

I guess what bugs me most is that -- despite the Griz beating UNC -- twice, the last win by 10 in the Big Sky Conf Championship, the metrics rating services STILL have Montana rated a distant second to the Bears:
Kenpom: Montana 157, UNC 122
Haslametrics: Montana 139, UNC 109

My opinion: It's an implicit built-in error in most rating services to place too much weight on early season losses in calculating team strength tourney time.

I've followed every single Montana NCAA game with hopes of a win, knowing the Griz would most likely lose. Some of those losses were blowouts, but... upsets have, and can happen. Why not this year? This team has remarkable character and pugnacity. So, Go Griz!

P.S. My UM college roomie for four years lives in Milwaukee and is a rabid Wisconsin fan. After telling me he'll win either way, he hinted that he thought Wisconsin to be inconsistent and over-rated... for what that's worth.

I think you'd be surprised. I haven't polled every player all time or anything, but more of them know what Egriz is and have been here than one would think. I know Sammy Akem has said it was demoralizing in the past after a loss to see the team trashed. If I remember right, it was Schmidt who was told to get on here and post fake injury rumors when he was a player. Zac Crews has been publicly outted for having twitter burner accounts to talk shit. Guarantee you he is on Bobcat Nation and probably over here.

I think they are kids involved in the most important thing in their life up to this point, their D1 college athletic journey, and in Montana we have a dearth of ways for them to read about themselves and their team. They have some level of an urge to read about themselves and interact.

The OKC newspaper is predicting a Griz win
