Stockton Gone

I have been mentioned it a few times that it sounds like Shawn Stockton, was considering leaving the program. I have been hearing rumors to that effect for a couple months now. I have it on pretty good authority that Stockton will indeed be leaving the Griz program at the end of the school year. I believe he will look at enrolling at a JC and then hope to bounce back to D-1 for his junior year. Stockton's leaving is totally something he decided to do, the coaches did not/will not cut him.

Look for Tinkle to sign a point guard in the next week - the signing period starts April 15 - they would prefer to sign a JC guard but if they can not find the "right guard" look for them to sign a high school guard, and let he and Will Cherry battle for the back up role.

BTW Mods if you feel this better belongs in the rumor section feel free to move it.

Do you think he left because of Cherry? Cherry is definitely going to be eating a lot of the PG mins available...or at least he should! Cherry is legit, its going to be fun watching him and Lillard battle it out for the next few years.

Mslacat: you seem to be the expert of Big Sky basketball recruiting, in your opinon, who do you think has had, so far, the best recruiting class? Next week is going to be interesting to see who signs.

Rivals.com has Montana rated #1 coming out of the November signing period, and I would have to agree with them at that point. Since then Cherry's stock has risen significantly, Wood's stock is also starting to rise a little. Woods did not play high school ball this winter, but is just starting to get out to the spring league circuit, and people are really talking how much his game has approved. On the other end Hutchison stock has dropped a little. People like his skills, but question his motivation. I have not had a chance to look over all of the Big Sky schools but I think Portland was looking like they had a great class lined up for the spring but who knows now that Bone left. Weber's class looked good also. The school though who I think may sneak up on folks is Northern Colorado. They singed Emmanuel Addo last fall a 6-8 very athletic power forward from Minnesota who the Griz and Weber really wanted. He is going to a very good Big Sky player. They also signed 6-9 Connor Osborne of Colorado who was considered a sleeper last summer but after they signed him his stock has gone through the roof. ESPN recently raised him from a 40 grade to a 85 grade. They also have a commitment from Tate Unruh a 6-1 point guard from Missouri who is highly rated on Rivals. They are also currently involved with another handful of highly ranked players to fill a couple more spots. They look like they could end up with a very nice class.

will christmas come in april for the griz men? that package would be a super-quick pure-point, ready to step in right now. imagine we got another player of the caliber of a.j. or virgil matthews, to team up with a.j. and will cherry. that would be huge.

i'm still not sold on cherry as a point guard, especially as a true freshman. i am sold on cherry, a.j., digs, woods and a new recruit making it pure hell on opposing offenses with a full-court trapping defense. this would be a weapon that montana simply has never had--ever.

one more thing i'd like to see, especially after watching the ncaa tournament--a big bruiser up front, an enforcer that goes about 250, 260. how about one of our griz offensive linemen or tight ends that played basketball in high school as a walk on? the two things you notice when you watch clips of games played back in the magic-bird era: how skinny those guys were, and what poor defense they played. chisled players combined with incredible defensive schemes, have really transformed basketball over the last generation. plus the infusion of international talent.

oh, and argh!'s jump shot.

If he is leaving because of competition, he should never have been here. I can't believe that is the reason. He should have redshirted this year. Freshman point guards hardly ever suceed at a high level, including Will Cherry. AJ excelled when he ran the point, why change. We need a banger.

Amen.....we have enough guards and small forwards....get someone who wants to rebound and knock some people on their asses.

I will miss Stockton. I liked his willingness to drive the key, his vision and passing skills, and his hustle. Perhaps he is making the right decision to get more playing time at a JC. Nice guy - wish him the best. Perhaps he will come back after a year.

rivals and scout say Damon Powell is class of 2009. Does he have the grades for D-I basketball? Someone get him a tutor and a UM uniform. If UM wants to get fans excited about Griz BBall again, a dozen Will Cherry to Damon Powell alley-oops should do the trick.

Powell has to go the JC route, and will be playing for Southern Idaho JC for the next two years. He was planning on signing with Fresno State.

Despite what I have previously posted, I was by two sources with good knowledge of the Griz program, recently that it is not a done deal that he will be leaving. One source claims it is more likely than not that he will return. A couple weeks back I was talking with some folks out of Spokane and to them it seemed it was a done deal.

i'm all for pluck and character in athetes, but at some point in basketball, anatomy is destiny. despite a magnificent performance in the state championship game as a junior, stockton was not offered by any of the pac-ten programs, and when i saw him play at portland state this past year (in a game where every member of our team looked awful), he appeared to lack the quicks or handle we need at the point. not to say he's not a very good athlete, i honestly wonder if his name were smith or jones if he wouldn't be playing football.

meantime, will cherry will re-define for the montana program what pure athleticism means to a basketball team.

THe pac 10 is a top 5 conference or top 10 for sure. So I'm not sure why you would point out that he wasn't recruit by pac 10 schools. There are a lot of guys who would dominate in the Big Sky that wouldn't be recruited by pac 10 schools either. He was a low major D1 recruit that went to a Low major D1 program.
