With seven ranked teams losing, there’s bound to be a lot of movement in the top-25. And -- just so you know -- I did not start with any pre-conception that the Griz would move up (or not). I let my "formulas" work.
Guess, Team, (Record), [Current Rank]
1 Sam Houston State (9-0) [1]
2 Jacksonville State (8-1) [2]
3 Eastern Washington (8-1) [3]
4 North Dakota State (8-1) [4]
5 Citadel (9-0) [5]
6 James Madison (8-1) [7]
7 Chattanooga (8-1) [9]
8 Villanova (7-2) [10]
9 Richmond (7-2) [6]
10 North Carolina A&T (8-1) [11]
11 South Dakota State (6-3) [13]
12 North Dakota (8-2) [16]
13 Central Arkansas (8-1) [17]
14 Charleston Southern (5-3) [8]
15 Coastal Carolina (7-2) [18]
16 Montana (6-3) [19]
17 Grambling State (6-1) [21]
18 Western Illinois (6-3) [12]
19 New Hampshire (6-3) [22]
20 Cal Poly (6-3) [14]
21 Youngstown State (6-3) [15]
22 Harvard (7-1) [23]
23 Samford (6-3) [20]
24 Lehigh (8-2) [24]
25 Wofford (6-3) [NR]
NR Stony Brook (5-4) [25]
Of course, with four matchups between ranked teams, there had to be four ranked losers. Those teams should not get hurt too bad unless it was a “bad loss.” Thus, the Richmond-JMU game was very close all the way, so I do not think the pollsters will drop Richmond out of the top-10. And the Citadel-Samford game went into OT, so Samford should do okay. In fact, I can imagine those teams not going down even as far as I project.
Conversely, the fact that EWU went into CP and doubled them up on the score looks very bad. I’m guessing Poly will drop the “usual” six spots. Same goes for Youngstown State, which almost got shut out by NDSU.
#18 Western Illinois losing at home to a Illinois State also looks very bad, even though it was only by 5 points. But Illinois State was not just unranked, it had a losing record. Even after the upset, they’re only at 5-5. Not good (for Western Illinois).
Stony Brook, sitting at #25, could not afford any loss, “good” or “bad.” They will surely drop out of the top-25. But that created a problem as to who might move up. Turns out, the top five “Others Receiving Votes” all lost. So I was left with a choice between Wofford (6-3) and North Carolina Central (7-2). Wofford being in the SoCon versus NCC in the pitiful MEAC, I went with Wofford.
At the end of all that, the Griz could rise to #16.
Edit: As was pointed out to me, I totally missed the fact that Chas Southern lost -- and to a team with a losing record. We watched the end of that game! Have no idea how I screwed that up. Anyway, that does change the order just a bit, but does not make any difference for the Griz.
