State A Tournament

A ticket to the high school games should get you into the Griz game that night. Play before a packed house for the last two games would be awesome. Better than 3,000 empty seats. Talk about a recruitment tool.

Agreed. It'd be nice if they gave free tickets to all the players of the HS teams too. Encourage them to show up and watch the Griz play.

Need to get more fans in the seats even if that means giving away more freebies. Those freebies might hook a new fan or two and get some more people interested in Grizzly basketball!

I'm sure the teams could get free tickets but if I were a coach they would be home resting since the goal is to win the state championship.

You seem to forget, we are talking about teenagers here. Hmmm, be at a game under adult supervision, enjoying the game and having fun? OR being hijacked in a hotel running wild, playing video games, swimming, etc? In this case, I doubt it really matters. Teenagers will be teenagers. If I were the coach or player, I'd prefer to attend the game.

I think you under estimate the game planning that these high school teams, especially the good ones, put into a game. I guess it's a difference of opinion but I would get a good dinner, get some rest and start game planning how to make the chipper. I also would imagine some of them are tired of sitting in bleachers all day watching basketball, fans included.

I have coached teenagers in basketball and baseball. Each kid is different as well. What we found best was giving them options, with parents and coaches agreeing 1st. We set aside a few hours for player/team preparation which did not create conflicts, regardless. Some adults (coaches and parents) volunteered to supervise at the hotel, other chose to do so at the game(s). Each player had their choice of which they wanted to participate in. We never had less than 75% of the team choose to participate at attending the game(s). Not one time did we have a discipline problem or kids causing trouble.

Many teenage athletes hate being isolated to a hotel room. Plus, it is a learning experience if a team can take in pregame activities, warm ups, etc of the college teams. It is really eye opening when those kids see college players doing the same things as the coaches have been preaching and teaching to them. Even better, them seeing the college or pro players (depending on what events you are attending) taking pregame seriously, and not jack around. If I were a hs coach there, I'd try finding out when the GRIZ are practicing on their off day (Friday) and see if my team could observe their practice? I would also have those kids observe the extra work the likes of Martin Breunig or Jordan Gregory put in on their own time.

The last few years, I could wonder Dahlberg in the afternoon to mid evening and find either, or both practicing their games on their own. Very few fans have witnessed their free time efforts they have put into their games. Being on campus with access to players and a college team is a huge learning opportunity for HS teams and players. Who knows what interaction with who will have an impact on team or players. I feel it is important for a coaching staff to know their players well enough to give them only options that will benefit each player. In this situation, it is a win win for each player. :thumb:

The Griz provide free tickets to any high school teams and coaches that request them for any home game throughout the year. That's not an issue and they are very generous with their offer.

Tonight's final games are set. Some familiar names from the football recruiting thread are playing;

6:30 consolation game. Havre facing Polson. Dane Warp of Havre is quite the Bball player.

8:00 Championship. Billings Central vs. Dillon. Jacob Hadley of Billings is another fun to watch on the court.

State A was fun to watch at UM! Too bad MHSA doesn't have a clue how to run a tourney. Sat night games showed lots of athletic talent and heart. Lots of difference between Warp and Hadely in their games. Warp got lazy with the game on the line, even giving up the ball when he could've won it and Hadely showed lots of competitiveness to the end. There's a reason one is playing (football) in the Big Sky next year and one is in the Frontier.

You do know Warp could've played in the Big Sky for football but decided to play basketball? Warp shot the ball 33 times in the game vs Central. Don't think he was giving it up too often.
