Nope. THE MW has boxed the AAC out of the west. OSU and WSU said the new MW TV deal with them included was better than expected. Besides the 6 new members to the AAC are only getting $2 million a year in TV money and that is worse than the MW

AAC lost SMU and have few options

Mountain West Conference Media Deal
The Mountain West agreed to a $270 million media rights deal in 2020 with CBS and FOX, according to The Athletic. That would mean teams are scheduled to be paid $4 million per year.

The arrangement would end after the 2025-26 season.

AAC Media Deal
The AAC and ESPN agreed to a 12-year contract beginning in 2019 worth about $1 billion, via USA Today. The deal was to pay each program just less than $7 million per year when it was made but increased over time. SMU, for example, reportedly received about $8.2 million in 2022.

AAC was before their big 12 departures and that changed the deal. When they left ESPN kept the payout at 7 million for existing members but lowered it to 2 million for new members. New members are making less than the MWC teams. Also MW deal can be renegotiated with new members and is due to expire in two years while the AAC goes for a long time. There is a reason 5 MWC teams turned down the AAC for membership.

"According to Thamel, the new members are expected to earn $2 million annually from the AAC’s TV deal with the remaining members continuing to average approximately $7 million annually."

Yup. I just said ACC wouldn’t take them. Is that not true. Ha.

So you were just hollering from the rooftops about something no one stated?

I was pointing out that the ACC didn’t want them. That’s one of the reasons they didn’t go with Stanford and Cal. Not shouting, just adding to the discussion. I have read a lot about the PAC-12 and have a good PAC-12 guy in the know. Many of my comments are intended to add to the discussion, not comment on what someone states.

The real issue is dwindling dollars for the non P5 schools over time. These TV deals will get smaller and smaller. Lots of older folks who won’t be around to have a TV subscription and streaming services are at war with each other. Couple that with weak conferences who cannot make the playoffs and - poo is the end result. They will have to continue to expand the playoffs or create a sub conference so there is more interest. Griz nor the Cants aren’t moving up. There is nothing to “move up to”. All about $$ and there won’t be any.

In 2024. From a Stanford email I got this morning.

“ Stanford will join the ACC as a full member – both in terms of governance and share of media distributions. However, we will be contributing a portion of our media distributions back to the conference for several years. The level of these contributions will decrease over time.”

My email from the Berkeley chancellor used the same wording. Seems like bending over backwards to not say "we're initially receiving partial shares."

What do Cal, Stanford, and SMU have in common that the ACC would want them?

Warm P5 bodies that give the "lesser" ACC teams some stability in the event the FSU/ Clemson/ UNC leave.

Beats the fuck out of having to go independent or joining the G5 MWC.

No doubt. ACC won't last forever as is - Clemson, FSU and UNC are too itchy to leave - but this lets Cal and Stanford survive for this round of realignment.
