Griz Athletics Spring Sports start this weekend

Update from the Indoor Track & Field Championships:

Congratulations to UM and Missoula's very own Whitney Morrison on winning the Women's Pentathlon in a stunning upset victory. The Senior in her final indoor meet ranked third coming into the meet and was not expected to contend for the title and today and she was incredible going 4th in the 60mH, 2nd in the high jump, 2nd in the shot put, 2nd in the long jump, and 1st in the 800m to win the title. The best part of all, she beat out msu's Shelby Schweyen (yes Shannon's daughter lol) who was the huge favorite coming into the meet. Also congrats to Griz freshmen Kensey Gault for finishing 5th in her first Pentathlon to put the Griz women in first place in the team standings. They already outperforming where they were expected to finish as a team after day one of the meet. No men's athletes were in action today for the Griz so they'll hit the ground running tomorrow. Hell of a day one for the Griz!

Thank you for all of your work in this thread. It is GREATLY appreciated.

Update from the Indoor Track & Field Championships:

After Day 2 of the meet, the Women sit in 3rd place in the team standings and the men sit in 5th place. The fact that the women are in 3rd place is very impressive considering they finished 9th last year. To put this into perspective for you, last year the women finished with 30 total points for the entire meet. With one full day still to go, they’ve already eclipsed last years point total with 38.5, and Erin Wilde hasn’t even competed in the high jump yet.

On the women’s side, half of the points scored yesterday came from the Pole Vault as the Griz had Samantha Serex finished second, Molly Chambers finished fourth, Shealynne McGee finished fifth, and Emma Weeden tied for eighth. Those four together combined for 17.5 points for the team total in one event. Also in the weight throw, Savana Ramirez placed fifth to pickup 4 more points for the women. The final 3 points of the day for the women came from the Distance Medley Relay team as they finished sixth in the event.

As for the men, they currently sit in 5th place with 23 points, but a lot of their signature events are coming up today. Patrick Kremer finished second in the high jump to notch 8 points yesterday. The Distance Medley Relay team had a surprisingly good third place finish to pick up 6 points. Gordon McMillan placed fourth in the long jump to notch 5 points, and Donaven Humphries finished sixth in the weight throw for 3 points. Plus we also got a point from Oliver Simianier for his eighth place finish in the heptathalon.

As for today, there are a lot of marquee events coming up. I mentioned Erin Wilde in the high jump, but also the men’s pole vault features 3 Grizzlies today for a lot of potential scoring opportunities there. Men’s shot put is today with Missoulas very own Alex Shields as the favorite to win that event but also features Humphries as well. Women’s 60mH features 2 Grizzlies, men’s 400m features freshmen phenom Braden Ankeny who has a chance today. Mens 200m with Karson Brit’s will be worth keeping an eye on. Plus both men’s and women’s 4x4 relay teams will be in contention today as well. There’s Grizzlies all over the finals today but these are just some of the events to keep an eye on.

The women have positioned themselves very nicely for a top 3 finish and I believe will get it done. The men I think can get there as well but need a strong day. Go Griz!

Updates from the weekend: 2/28-3/2

Griz Track & Field had a great weekend at the Big Sky Championships in Flagstaff. The men took third and the women took fourth as both teams shattered their preseason rankings. The men were picked fifth and the women were picked ninth as they vastly exceeded those expectations. The women would've also finished third but Sac State had a couple of huge performances in the 60m dash to just pull ahead of the Griz. This was the men's best finish at the championships since 2014 and the women's best finish since 2017. Doug Fraley and his staff should be applauded for turning this program around as quickly as they have. They pulled this program out of the gutter when he first took over and has turned them into a respectable program with lots of high level recruiting (which you're starting to see results from). The question now becomes, can this program take that next step of joining the contender category with the cats and NAU? It won't be easy and we're gonna have to start recruiting and developing more distance runners to even stand a chance, but I know we'll try. Excited to see what these teams do in the outdoor season. They'll have one month off now before their first outdoor meet.

Women's Tennis was down in Spokane for a pair of matches against Gonzaga and Seattle U. They lost on Friday to Gonzaga 4-0 but beat Seattle U 4-3 on Saturday. The Griz got some terrific singles performances out of Grace Haugen and Kelsey Phillips as well as the rest of the girls in the Seattle match. The women now sit at 3-6 overall and 1-0 in Big Sky play. The women will head down to California this weekend to take on UC Davis on Friday and will play their second conference match on Sunday against Sac State who's off to an incredibly good start and looks like the odds on favorite to win the Big Sky. Big test for the women this weekend.

A reminder as well that Men's Tennis will also be down in California this week and they have a busy week. They will be down in Stockton on Wednesday to take on Pacific, then they'll play their first conference match on Friday at Sac State, then later in the day will participate in Sac's golden state invite taking on Nevada, then on Saturday they'll wrap up their busy week with their third and final match in Sacramento against Saint Mary's.

Updates from the weekend: 3/7-3/9

Men's Tennis had a busy weekend down in California playing 4 matches over 3 days. They got things started on Thursday against #50 Pacific in Stockton, losing that match 4-1 after the match was delayed by a day due to rain. The only win in this match came from freshmen Duncan McCall as everybody else really struggled in this one. About what you'd expect when you play a ranked team at their place. On Friday, the Griz played their first conference match of the year up in Sacramento against Sac State and won 5-2. That's the Grizzlies first win in Sacramento since 2018 and they start conference play 1-0. Later in the day they lost to Nevada 4-1 in a match where Jason Brown sat some of our top players who got dinged up in the Sac State match. The Griz finished up their busy weekend on Saturday beating Saint Mary's 4-2 to go 2-2 on the weekend. The men now sit at 10-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play. They'll be down in Arizona next weekend and will play Grand Canyon on Friday then play at NAU on Sunday in Flagstaff.

Women's Tennis was also down in California this weekend for a pair of matches against UC Davis and Sac State. They lost to Davis 6-1 and got blanked by nationally ranked Sac State 7-0 so no the best results for the women. The women now sit at 3-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The women will play their first home match of the year on Sunday against Portland State who beat us in a non-conference match 4-2 all the way back on January 18. I suspect we'll have a better performance against them this time.

Women's Golf will also be back in action next weekend down in Arizona for NAU's Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona. Big opportunity for Golf next weekend to improve upon what they did last month.

Updates from the weekend: 3/14-3/16

Griz Golf was back in action this weekend after a month off down in Sedona Arizona and it was quite the bizarre tournament to say the least. It was supposed to be a 3 day, 72 hole tournament but after day one the Griz only got through 10 holes after play was suspended for snow on the course on Friday. The snow continued all day Saturday and play was completely suspended on Saturday and this led to tournament officials having to turn it into just simply an 18 hole tournament with play resuming on Sunday. The Griz played their remaining 8 holes from Friday on Sunday and would finish 17th out of 18th. Obviously not a very good result for them but it's also hard to cast any judgement at them when the conditions were so shitty and you can't really get a true read on an 18 hole tourney. Golf will have 3 weeks off before they're back in action in Arizona where hopefully by then they're not dealing with those types of conditions.

Men's Tennis was also down in Arizona this weekend for a pair of matches against Grand Canyon and NAU. After getting a huge 4-3 non-conference win on Friday down in Phoenix, the Griz fell flat on their face in Flagstaff losing 7-0 to move to 1-1 in conference play. They had some guys play through injuries against NAU, but even then you gotta do better than getting blanked in a conference match. That's a tough one to drop for the men in terms of the title race. We'll see how they bounce back from that. The men will be down in Utah next week to take on Utah State and Weber State.

Women's Tennis played their first home match of the year against Portland State, and it did not go well as they would lose 6-1 and drops them to 1-2 in conference play. It's clear by now that the women don't quite have the team they had last year. The women will be down in Poky next weekend to take on Utah Tech and Idaho State in a conference match they have to have if they wanna stay in the race. Big weekend coming up for the women.

Updates from the weekend: 3/28-3/30

Apologies for missing last weekend. I'll briefly run through what happened last weekend. Men's Tennis was down in Utah last weekend and dropped a non-conf match to Utah State but won at Weber 4-3 for the first time in a decade. The Women were in Poky last week and lost to Idaho State and Utah Tech.

As for this week, Men's Tennis was finally at home for the first time in over 2 months and they played a pair of conference matches on Saturday against Portland State and Sunday against Idaho. Saturday was light work for the men as they completely dismantled PSU 7-0. Because of the lopsided result and most guys winning in straight sets, it allowed them to be fresh for Sunday's big time matchup against undefeated in league play Idaho. Who came into the match riding a 5 match win streak. The Griz would win the doubles point to go up 1-0 after doubles came down to a tiebreaker on the final court, but the Griz eeked it out for the win. From there things would remain tight as all 6 singles matches went to a third set, but 4 of those matches would go the Griz way as the Griz got the huge 5-2 win over Idaho that would move the Griz to 4-1 in league play. The men have 3 matches remaining @ ISU, vs. EWU, vs. cats and they should be heavily favored in all three of those. The Griz currently sit in 2nd place and one match back of NAU. The Jacks have been very good at home but have struggled on the road and they go to Idaho next week. That would be the Griz opportunity to get into a tie for first with NAU, but the Jacks hold the tiebreaker over the Griz so NAU has to lose 2 of their remaining 4 conference matches. I feel good about Idaho's chances of beating them, but not sure about EWU, Sac, or the cats beating them. We'll see how it shakes out.

Women's Tennis only had one match this weekend @ NAU and it was bad as they lost 7-0. The women have lost 6 in a row and are now 1-4 in league play. They currently sit in 8th in the standings and have to finish at least 6th to make the conference tournament, and right now I'm skeptical that they will. Their last 3 matches all come at home against Eastern, Idaho, and the cats so there is still hope but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Griz Track & Field opened up their outdoor season this weekend at home in the Al Manuel Invite and the Griz/cat Duel. Unfortunately (and unsurprisingly) we lost the duel on both the mens and womens side. The men were able to keep it close with the cats, and while our program has vastly improved under Doug Fraley's leadership, we're still not quite on the cats level yet. I'm confident we can get there, and we're getting closer, but still have work to do. The team will be down in Spokane next week for the Whitworth Pace Meet.

Apologies for no updates in a while. I've been crazy busy, but briefly I will just let you all know that Women's Tennis defeated the cats for the third straight year on Saturday 4-3. They are 2-5 in conference play and if they wanna grab the final spot into the Big Sky tournament in a couple weeks, then they have to beat Eastern at home on Saturday.

The men dismantled Eastern at home on Saturday 7-0 and they will host the cats on Saturday in the regular season finale. Currently the men sit in a 3 way tie for second place with Idaho and Idaho State for the 2 seed which guarantees a first round bye at the tourney. Those two play each other this week and the Griz will be pulling for Idaho in that one while also making sure they take care of their own business on Saturday.

Meanwhile, today is Day 2 of the Big Sky Golf championships down in Arizona, and the Griz had a very good day 1 yesterday that put them in 3rd place behind only Sac State and the cats. Big day today as today's result will determine a lot about where we stand heading into the final day tomorrow. I'll link the live scoring for all of you.
