Special Teams

Can special team coverage improve this late in the season?

One consistent problem this year is kickoff and punt coverage, every opponent has torched our coverage for big plays.

Flip-side, kickoff returns are poor and punts are not fielded and offense gets put in a negative field position.

Don't want to open up the kicking issues, Semenza is young and backup doesn't look better.

Is it a lack of speed by cover team, poor technique, or bad kicking(hang time)?

I expressed exact same concerns in earlier post....no one gave any reasons (even sugar coated oned) New special teams coordinator this year??? Stitt doesn't emphasize it in practice tme devotion??? Regardless, tough to win against equal or better teams if you "lose" this portion of game each week.....oh no Bad fan label coming my way.

A lack of priority.

yup. I remember thinking every kickoff under Hauck we could take it back and since (I think outside of Sambrano taking Pflu's first kickoff back) it has been abysmal. I miss that.

The lack of fielding punts and letting them roll and coverage allowing too many yards on returns should be correctable.

Blocking for returns may take longer.

Griz have had several drives start inside their own 10 yard line. It has been surprising to see success on many of them.

At EWU one drive had 14 plays and covered less than 50 yards. That's a good drive, but drives with 10 or more plays are hard to sustain consistently.

Baldwin and Sourers got chunk plays and were good at flipping field position. Forcing long sustained drives for the Griz. Then when Griz would score momentum would swing right back with big special teams play.

The positive is...if the coverage can keep return yards down...this in itself could create better scoring opportunities.

Someone said get over Bobby Hauck. Compare his teams regarding Special Teams to the current team.
Comments?

I don't care about comparing as much as seeing MT players on special teams make tackles and keep edges contained.

There seems to be a good mix of starters and second string and special team only players. Special team play should be used to gain playing time on offense and defense. Throw the guys who earn it a bone.
