Special Teams play yesterday

I'll open with admittedly saying it was against a D2 school, but it was a pretty darn good showing from this special teams unit as a whole yesterday. With new returners, new guys on blocking/coverage units, new kickers, new punter, new holder... outside of one missed field goal - it was quite the day.

Flowers - 51 yard KR / Sulser - 54 yard KR
Sulser - 46 PR / Hauck - 31 yard KR

CWU - 5 punt return yards total
CWU - 51 kick return yards on 4 attempts, a 12.5 ypr average

1-2 on field goals / 8-8 on PATs

Buschini a 47.5 average on 2 punts.

6 kickoffs into the endzone for touchbacks

I have to admit I was concerned about our new kickers. Not now. I know it was A game but my goodness, what leg strength? 95 can kick the ball out of the stadium! 82 has a very direct approach to PAT kicking...kicks the ball very straight with power. Right now I have no concerns about the kicking game.

OD losing the coin toss is concerning though
Yes that’s very concerning. He needs to get his shit together. That craps not gonna fly. He better start practicing flipping coins in his sleep and coming up with the correct calls or he’ll have to ride the bench for the coin toss

I wonder how much of a look Camden Casper will get in fall or if they plan on RSing him with all these other kickers on the roster.

I didn’t like what I saw yesterday either from kickers. Buschini was fantastic punting! It was fun watching him. Place kickers are going to get blocked. Any FCS program with tall defensive lineman will batt those line drive field goals and extra point kicks down. Too straight and no height. Check out Capser’s game videos. They go straight up and clear 10-15 feet above the goalpost uprights. Capser will turn the kicking pool on its head when he shows up this fall. Buschini blasting kickoffs and Capser kicking in the place kicker spot might put Griz kicking at the top of the Big Sky and FCS.

Yeah, that could really be a special group. I'm still concerned with FG/PATs though.

Why?

Why could it be a special group, or why am I concerned about the FG/PAT kicking?

If the first, I'd say it's fairly obvious. If it's the second, I'd say it's fairly obvious, but I'll detail further: One short miss, one doink. Kicks are low liners susceptible to blocks.

Couldn’t agree more. I have no idea why everyone thought the FG/PAT kickers did great. I guarantee Portland State is preparing for it now. Any team with a defensive line that can reach up will batt those down. Get through this weekend. Signing Capser was major smart move by Hauck. Like I said above, go watch his game film. He kicks freakishly high right off the hold. Balls clear way over top of uprights. Will be great to see him in action this fall I hope.
