Since the MissoulianRag won't do it...

A few weeks back BWALBERG posted some positive things that UM athletes are doing.

Because the Local rag NEVER seems to print these things, I thought I would make a sticky in the hopes that some paper might actually do a peice on these athletes. While it is true that drama sells... It used to be that news that was worthy was a headline also...

Are you ready Gwen?

Here is a decent article by Greg Rachac with the Billings Gazette.

Great to have just some positive press--even if it has to come from out of town--are you listening Missoulian?

Good job Payton. Tis about time we mention the great things all the young Griz athletes do.

The Missoulian seems to think the Griz progam is tainted and it continues to push that agenda. I am damn tired of it.

One of the fastest growing news papers in the country located in Texas will ONLY publish BOTH sides of any story. Never will they spout off on one side of an issue. Missoulian are you listening?

Kudos PR for presenting this thread. Wish I would have thought of it.

I just read the Rachac article and appreciated the well thought out position. However there is one big mistake that needs to be corrected. When he mentions the Beau Donaldson case he states that Beau was "found guilty ....". This is not true. Beau Donaldson pled guilty, he was not found guilty by a jury.

When put in context of the upcoming Jordan Johnson trial this is an important distinction to draw.

I don't think bwahlberg wrote what he posted nor did he take credit for it. He copied something he found on Facebook - don't remember who wrote it. At any rate, starting a thread with positive news about players and their activities off-field is good.

Thought I would add this letter to the editor that was in the Missoulian this past Thursday!

Jason Washington
Verdict was a tragedy

I read with sorrow the verdict in the Jason Washington case. He hasn't hurt anyone, stolen from anyone, attempted to deceive or defraud anyone. He followed rules that were established by this state.

Here is the Washington I know: Six years ago , an anonymous invite from an injured Grizzly quarterback, Washington, granted my dying son, John, the chance to attend the homecoming game, be on the sidelines with the team, be honored by the team and recieve several Griz gear items from Washington. We did not know Washington; he did this out of the kindness of his heart. One of many children with cancer that he did things for.

Three months later, when my son passed, there was Washington at his service, which touched me deeply and was a surprise to me, but not since getting to know what a good, kind man he is. Honest, good father, and friend.

This breaks my heart. Something's gotta change.

Material that has overly vulgar, obscene or indecent. This includes posting links to other sites/media that violate this rule
Posts that are hateful or racially offensive
Unrelated Advertising or any form of commercial solicitation without prior consent from forum administrator

Not quite sure I understand the need for the use of the word Rag here......in a sticky by a mod even. Basically stooping to the same level as the Missoulian.

Also is not the header in violation of the above rule under code of conduct. By directly referring to the Missoulian you are basically soliciting people to investigate why you think it is. The Missoulian is about much much more than sports. It offers a community service, and in fact KPAX & KECI are not much different in their approach to the sports world. Lets be honest, in terms of what is posted eGriz is much more of a "rag" then anything the Missoulian can print. The irony is incredible.

I agree with the gist of the topic, and actually you should put in the subject line the purpose of the sticky. The subject adds no worthy value to the topic....and should be changed. BE creative, and enter a subject that will attract positive posts....and will not attract comments like mine. Change the post title, and I can edit this.

Really....

The Missoulian is the hometown paper and there are people within its walls that want to do what ever possible to hurt UM athletics.

I think it is very fair to show their lack of journalistic conduct.

And it is also fair to make a sticky to show how athletes at UM do great things on and OFF the field of battle.

BTW... You have the right to post what you want, I wont change my post in order to get your approval.

Let me get this straight - you are worried about trashing, tarnishing, and bashing the poor Missoulian? Don't be overly concerned. The Missoulian has done a fantastic job of destroying their own reputation. A thread on egriz is not going to take down the publication. The Missoulian will do that on it's own.

The paper is about more than the athletic department at the UM. Amazing how many knuckleheads on here dont understand that. Yes I agree that the reporting is biased however this thread has potential, and is a good topic.

Why not call it out for what it really is? Your subject line adds nothing to what this thread is about.....and is juvenile at best. The fact that you're a mod makes it that much worse, and the fact that you're basically breaking egriz rules escalates it further.

Be smart....change the name to something good. Something that attracts people to post. Something positive (otherwise you're no better than those you are condescending towards).

Personally I understand the historical value of newspapers, the impact on on the economy both through advertising, and articles. The good for any newspaper for outweighs the bad. I know no one on staff, or even anyone that works there but I do understand why a newspaper is important to any city....and especially Missoula. Do you think all those high school athletics would get the attention they would without a newspaper? All media sucks, and the majority of it is now biased and opinionated. Frankly I think you're ruining a good topic with a childish action.

I wont be back to this thread unless it changes...but will publish good deeds under a properly named thread.

On the flip side I find it interesting that fritz never writes anything critical of um athletics....it's like he works for the sid. Ive never seen a beat writer so sugary.

Fritz is a beat writer. Beat writer's don't and should NEVER EVER interject opinion into their stories. There is a MAJOR DIFFERENCE between a news article and a column. Columns are for opinion's. Bill Speltz is the Griz' football columnist. If you want opinion's on Griz football, read his stuff. Fritz doesn't get paid to interject his personal opinion's on Griz football. He's paid to write sports ARTICLES.

Beat writers most definitely provide analysis. That said, ill stop talking now as I dont read a ton of his stuff....i just havent seen him break many stories that come out of his beat assignment.

I'll say it again, a NEWS article has no business having opinion interjected into it. That's not what beat writer's do. Columnists do that, and the Missoulian has a Griz football columnist on its payroll. After every game, the Missoulian runs a game story, a notebook and a column. If you want opinion, read Speltz's column's. If you want to read facts from the game itself, read the gamer and notebook.

Lots of Neighbor opinion here....

and here...

and lots of other examples.

So yeah...beat writers provide analysis along with facts.

You're wasting your time friend. Might as well attempt to explain string theory to preschoolers.
