so, why no news? fax machine stuck? university has a new policy of not announcing signings the same week as a holiday? recruits illiterate? recruits changed minds? waiting to bundle all the signings in one big package?

elsewhere in the college basketball world, recruiting is a big deal. signings make news. at montana, we treat signing day like a latvian holiday. the missoulian honors it with a news embargo. mick leaves us in the pickle barrel. the montana website is silent.

somebody wake up the messengers. thank god for mslacat.

Yes, it seems to be a big deal at other schools.....

this just baffles me. we know we have two committments--stockton and ward. we know ward has signed. is there a snafu with stockton? has he changed his mind? if not, why would you want to delay one of the highest-profile signings in the history of the school?

The University can not comment on any commits until they have a copy of the signed letter of intent in their hands. The University also has to verify some things on the letter before they can announce it. Tinkle tends to be a guy that waits until he has all of his LOI in hand before announcing them. Now typically after signing a LOI a player will Fax a copy to the University and put the original in the mail. Maybe Tinkle wants to wait for the original in the mail or maybe someone forgot to fax his. It has already been reported that Ward signed his LOI in front of quite a few people from his high school.

Maybe there is another possibility Tinkle is trying to convince another player to commit. I know it does not appear that Tinkle has the scholarship to offer, but maybe a walk-on? Or maybe something else is up?

There you go, there are some reasons!!!!

if a fax is good enough for every other school in the country, why isn't it good enough for us? if ward and stockton have signed, why not announce it now?

this drives me nutty, obviously. if you're in business, you want to please your customers. if you're in sports administration, you should want to please your fans. fans who know that recruiting is at least half the battle, and who look forward to signing day. gonzaga, cal, stanford, montana state--you name the school, they've announced their recruits. what, our recruits have to go through border security?

On the KGVO pre-game show yesterday, Tinks said the announcement would come today. He talked about Stockton and Ward and said there was not going to be anyone else at this point since only 2 scholarships were available.

And this is exactly what UM must work on. This is what separates long term success stories from flashes in the pan. Obviously, a great season makes people interested, but what about a down year? The trick is keeping butts in the seats during those years too.

CDA, you have a legit point. However, when it comes to supporting basketball, unfortunately GRIZNATION needs alot of work. Even when winning they only come against name opponents. It is sad to say, but "GRIZNATION" is very fairweathered when it comes to basketball!" As a GRIZ fan this disappoints me. Step it up, especially to those within 20 miles of Missoula. No excuse to not support the team.

I see that Weber State women's team signed 6'3" Joey O'Neil from Butte. Carla has done alright with the leftovers that dont get an offer from the griz.

The LG have one more schollie to give out, to get to 15 for next year. Which has generally been the case the last thirty years. I'am thinking post.

Tides player gets full ride to Division I school
Mathias Ward verbally commits to play for Grizzlies

Mathias Ward has recorded a first for Gig Harbor High School hoops.
The Tides senior forward became the first Tides basketball player ever to earn a full-ride NCAA Division I scholarship after verbally committing to the University of Montana two weeks ago.

“It feels good to get the whole recruiting process over with,” said Ward, who chose the Grizzlies over Weber State. “It’s good knowing that I get four years of schooling paid for. I think it will be really fun playing against Division I players and going to the next level.”

After seeing Ward play during tournaments in Las Vegas and Los Angeles with his club team Total Package last July, UM showed lots of interest in the talented big man. Ward had offers from other schools and made visits but hadn’t found a school he liked until making an official visit on Sept. 30 to Missoula, Mont.

“Once I got on campus, I liked it a lot better,” Ward said. “I had to go there. I liked the community as far as it’s an athletics community. I also liked the coaches and the team members.”

After a campus tour, Ward met with the dean of the business school, the athletic director and went to the Grizzlies’ homecoming football game.

Now that Ward’s college future is secured, he said that lessens the pressure the Tides have for their upcoming basketball season.

“It takes the pressure off of me as far as getting a scholarship,” he said. “But I still want to do the best I can and go as far as we can.”

Ward’s rise to Division I status has been quite a ride for his parents Stephanie and Brian. Mathias started playing basketball in middle school with dreams of playing Division I hoops.

“When Mathias told me that was his goal in middle school,” Stephanie said, “I thought it was a pipe dream. But we always encouraged him to keep playing and trying hard.”

The third oldest of seven children, Mathias used hard work to get his scholarship. He linked up with Total Package in high school and worked vigorously to improve the weak spots in his game in order to interest Division I coaches.

Mathias even handled the recruiting process by himself.

“We’re very pleased with what he’s done,” Stephanie said. “I told him I’m very proud of how he handled this whole recruiting process. It’s a very difficult process to navigate. I’m proud of the manner in which he has handled himself.”

Brian Ward added that he thinks his son made the right choice in going to UM.

“The Grizzlies are the only thing that’s happening there, so that’s good,” he said.

Another element for Ward is the fact he’s currently taking running start classes and will earn his associate of arts degree when he graduates from high school in June. He can earn a master’s degree by the time his four years of college eligibility are up.

Ward intends to study business while at Montana. When asked about the prospects of an NBA career, he laughed and said: “We’ll see how college goes first, I guess.”

Actually, with Betsy Snead leaving the team, Lady Griz will four scholarships to give out. Two of them for Ferda and Hurley.

UM has yet to announce the Lady Griz signings. Maybe waiting on the fourth one that will replace Snead.

I spoke to someone two weeks ago that said Selvig was close to landing a really good black player out of California. Tianna Ware must be her.

Way to go Robin.
