Sierra College point guard Matt Johnson has signed a scholarship to play basketball for Northern Arizona, becoming the third Sierra player to commit to a Division I college in the past few weeks. Guard James Doran of Ponderosa will play for Eastern Washington, while forward Jordan Swarbrick of Utah State will play for Utah Valley State.

A 2005 Sacramento High School graduate and first team All Metro selection, Johnson was featured in "Longest Odds," a March series in The Bee. Johnson had received interest from Division I colleges out of Sac High but didn't qualify academically.

At Sierra College, Johnson was a two-time all conference selection. This past season, he averaged 10.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Johnson chose Northern Arizona over Montana State.
His mother, stepfather and son will move this fall to Phoenix, which is 150 miles from Flagstaff, where NAU is located. NAU plays in the Big Sky Conference, the same league as Sacramento State.

"I can't wait to go there," Johnson said. "They're a winning program, and the coaches and players are great. They're really good people...This is what I've been working for my whole life."
