Has anyone ever tried to field a short kickoff and pitch it back to the returner? Especially if we have the explosive guys back there seems like something what would be worth trying.

Yes. And I have a personal example. Against Yale, a up back at about the 20 TE fielded a short kick and turned to lateral to a deep back. I was on the KO team. I saw what was happening, ran between the two and intercepted the lateral.
