Couple of folks made a comment over the weekend that this team is winning games like an old school Bobby Hauck team. So it had me looking back at probably the best team from that era, 2008, as an example of what the potential ceiling might be at the Griz’ current rate of being undefeated in the sloppiest way possible. That 2008 Montana Grizzlies squad:
• only beat Cal Poly by 2 on the road
• had to score a game winning touchdown to win 29-24 against UC Davis at home
• barely escaped Central Washington 38-35
• lost on the road to Weber State, 45-28
• got stuck in a rock fight with Eastern Washington before finally pulling away in the fourth, winning 19-3
• played around with Portland State, giving them a safety, score being 9-5, keeping them close until a scoring run began in the third quarter;
• played a 12 game schedule with no bye, starting on September 6 the weekend after Labor Day.
All of that sounds extremely familiar to this season, especially Cal Poly, Central Washington, and rock fights. I’ve also penciled in Weber State on road as a loss this year and have done so all season. That team went on a deep playoff run to the national title game. All that really helps put into perspective the performances the Griz have had so far and that they probably are just winning in their own extremely dumb stubborn ways.
The big question this year is just how good are the Cats relative to the Griz, who back then finished 7-5. I don’t think they’re finishing 7-5 this year. The problem I have is that I don’t really believe the Griz are as good as the older Bobby Hauck teams without some kind of statement win, and we really won’t get the opportunity for one until the Brawl of the Wild. The Cats at least know they’re comparable to South Dakota State, despite losing at home.
At any rate, very excited to go back to the normal Griz colors next week against Sacred Heart (on another note, that game feels like tempting fate and someone is going to get hurt in a meaningless non-conference game; no bye week has to be awful).
