Well-traveled EWU QB makes bid for Hawks' No. 3 spot

Erik Meyer and the Seahawks have crossed paths before.
Some of Meyer's Eastern Washington University buddies were Seattle fans and raised Meyer's interest in the team. And when Meyer was an Eagle, his team's summer practices were on the bluff of fields overlooking the Seahawks' grounds at EWU, where Seattle used to hold training camp.
Today, Meyer is under contract with Seattle after stops in Cincinnati, where he got only two snaps in exhibition games as a rookie last year and was released; Scottsdale, Ariz., where he spent a month in the fall pitching in the San Francisco Giants organization; and Germany, where Meyer shined at quarterback for the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europa this past spring.
"I just felt it was the best fit for me," said Meyer, 24, who signed with Seattle at the end of last month. "I have to give football a fair shot. I know I can play at the next level, and I want to give it a full go."
The Seahawks signed Meyer to a two-year contract a few days after his return from Europe. Meyer completed 140 of 204 passes for 1,604 yards, 13 touchdowns to six thrown interceptions and an NFL Europa season-record 68.6 completion percentage.
That mark eclipsed the one set by Jake Delhomme (67.4) in 1999. Delhomme has since become a Pro Bowler with the Carolina Panthers.
Meyer compiled his solid numbers even after not being named Cologne's starter until Week 3 of the 10-game season. The Centurions finished 6-4 and one win away from the league title game.
Meyer will try to unseat David Greene as the No. 3 quarterback on the Seahawks' roster when training camp starts in 2 ½ weeks. An ankle injury that hampered his development in Cincinnati — where he signed as an undrafted free agent — is behind him, and there is an opportunity because the Seahawks lost their 2007 NFL Europa quarterback, Travis Lulay, to a shoulder injury that could force him to miss camp.
And Meyer ran an offense similar to the Seahawks' at EWU. He's 6 feet 1 and hopes to enter camp at 220 pounds.
"I feel like I'm pretty accurate, and I can move around in the pocket," he said.
