Scrimmage Thoughts

I left the scrimmage with the following thoughts: Qvale and Cherry both played extremely well and look ready to go. Both of them sat out the majority of the 2nd half of the scrimmage. The freshman Weisner is deadly if left open. His shooting in traffic tonight was not as good. It is going to be awfully hard if not impossible to redshirt Reader. The guy is athletic and fearless. Offensively, he is ready to contribute right now. Art Steward is really active and a tenacious defender. I can see him starting at the three. The guy that surprised me most was Jordan Wood. He is a smart ball player with real good court awareness. He also has a great looking three point shot. Based on what I saw tonight. I can see him starting at the two with Cherry at the point. Both Autry and Jamar came to life in the second half. Autry will play some point and seems to be similar to Cherry in terms of being vocal and animated. You can see that Jamar has tremendous skills and can get to the hole. Selvig had a real off night shooting although he did hit a couple of shots in the second half. Mathias Ward looked far more confident than last year at this time and had a very good offensive night. Hopefully others who were at the scrimmage will give their thoughts.

Great update, It is encouraging you mention good things on new guys, all good for the most part. How was Selvig moving, and was he in shape?

He seemed in shape and was taking shots; they just weren't falling. I was pleasantly surprised that none of the new guys seemed lost. We have a load of recruits with lots of skill and potential. I can see where deciding on redshirts will be tough.

I just got back and agree with the above. I sat behind the bench and listened to the coaches and players, it was a blast.
SO MUCH to say...so I'll prioritize my impressions:
Art Steward is the MAN. He was perhaps the best defender on a great defensive team. He looks like he has been here for 4 years. Kareem didn't have a chance and nobody else did when Art was on them.
Jordan Wood is the real deal, can get open and drill 3's. I think he may have had at least 4 ot 5.
Billy Reader.....Mtgrizrule is gonna be pissed when they burn his RS but it was clear tonight that he is going to bring points off the bench. He has solid quick moves, wants the ball and is the first real aggressive big guy in the paint we have had since Andrew Straight. Reader could use some pounds and he is going to foul a lot but we wont be sorry if he plays this year.
Mike Wiesner has a good game. He is NOT a guy that will be in the paint so no worries. With just he and Jordan Wood, Tinkle has filled the holes in our perimeter game.
Selvig looked fine. He didn't have any visible tape. Both he an Q played some long stretches together. The team all looked in great shape.

I'll feed some more to a starving GRZRULE in Denver..
Ward looked solid but he is battling a pretty tall Griz team. I think he will great against smaller post guys.
I thought Hutch played well too although he looks like a RS Freshman. He also was getting beat on by some darn good upper classmen big guys we have.
Stockton played fine but is going to be pushed by Autry.
Vaughn Autry and Kareem showed nice flashes and I think in 2 months they will be different ball players.
Chase Adams is and interesting one. He played a little wild and maybe needs some time to learn the speed at this level. He has a nice 3 point shot and made a good baseline drive for a score.
Taylor Farnsworth didn't play.

Damnit! Now I'm really excited. Thanks for all the great info!

Hope I can make a few games. I would have considered Weber at home had they not scheduled the damn game for 1PM. What a huge mistake that was. Possible BSC game of the year and it's on a workday afternoon.

Thanks for the updates guys. The newbies are more ready than I was expecting. Here is to hoping that carries over to the regular season. I will not be pissed if Reader does not redshirt. Especially if he is an aggressive big that brings attitude and points to the paint.

Good hearing the defense looks good early. Did the offense move the ball around well? Were they forcing shots or for the most part good looks?

What did you guys that went to the scrimmage think of Kareem? I might get killed for suggesting this ...and it's only been one scrimmage but he may be a candidate for a RS. I'd like to have him around in 5 years.

Redshirt will not happen for him. (1) We are unproven at SF no matter who we play there. (2) He signed with us for an opportunity to play right away. (3) Goes with 2, Tinkle would really hurt future recruiting by redshirting this highly of rated of a player from anywhere. Sorry, a program of your caliber and status just cannot afford risking future recruiting by redshirting someone like Cherry, Autry, or Jamar.
(4) These highly regarded recruits bring attention to other highly regarded and rated recruits.

Tinkle is playing the cards he is dealt perfectly now and the last few years. Tinkle's handling of Cherry was perfect last year as well. He will have to continue that with Autry and Jamar too. :thumb:

We appear to be in great shape at the 3 with Steward and Jamar. I don't think there is any way Jamar redshirts. He is ready now and I think he will be a major contributor this year.

Thanks for the updates. This should be a very interesting Griz basketball season, with lots of new faces on the court. Sounds like we have the potential to beat some very good teams. (Of course, given our inexperience, I suppose we also have the potential to lose to some not-so-very-good teams.) All in all, I haven’t been this excited to see the season start in many years.
