Scrimmage - 10:30am Saturday

The boys are planning to play at 10:30am on Saturday morning. Come on down to the gym. Should be interesting, and fun. The team is large (16 players), athletic, and talented. The returners have all improved. The new guys are also talented. Practice starts in 3 weeks.

After finally finding a way in, I saw some of it. It was quite informal but here are some thoughts. Of the new guys, I was probably most impressed by Zach Graves. This guy can really go to the hole and score. He also dribbles and handles the ball extremely well. He is lightning quick. Cameron Rundles is indeed a pure point guard. He makes nice passes and really seems to see the court well. He does not look like a freshman. Gus Chase is not real tall but seems very comfortable inside. He also looks very strong. He has nice inside moves, and also has a nice outside shot. Vanderjagt has very good skills for a young big man. He also shoots well from the outside. When he gets the ball in deep, he seems to know what to do and can score. Giovanni Sims is an athlete and very active. I can see why the GRIZ recruited him. Ryan Staudacher and Charley Cox were also there but did not play a ton, at least when I was there. Staudacher does look like a pure shooter. Of the veterans, I thought Jordan Hasquet, Matt Dlouhy, Stuart Mayes and Austin Swift stood out. Austin seems to have found his shot and he is a great passer. Dlouhy and Hasquet were hitting deep balls as was Sharp. Strait looks very strong is almost impossible to stop inside. I'm sure I missed plenty and hopefully someone else who managed to get in will add their thoughts. :thumb:

Thanks for the report TF!

Thanks for sharing.

This looked to be a great recruiting class. But Zach seemed to be the least heralded recruit. At least I had seen almost nothing on him.
Your comments are encouraging.

Good report, football is going good right now but soon to be outshined by a sweet 16 appearance. We are young and athletic and I will expect nothing less than a sweet 16 birth!!!!

I said it

PS: Charlie, not Charley

I am stoked for Basketball too. It should be a great year. Swilly, I like your optimism In basketball, one just never knows who cinderella will be. Had we shot close to what we normally did we might have beat BC and been there this past year. And to think, I was about to get on here and tell you to cool it, then I thought about it, hell, we were only one half from doing it. So, I will not be surprised if that happens in the next few years.

NOW I have it on the right subject

I agree with all the optimism. I felt a little down when Larry left, but I know Wayne is a good man and learned from some of the best. I believe this is our breakout year for Grizzly Basketball. It will be hard to hold us back after this year. I think we have a chance to sweep the Sky and go into March Madness as high or higher seed than last year. I can’t wait for hoops.

g.w.--do you think graves, rundles and vanderjagt will all play right away?
The GRIZ are loaded with post players and I think Strait is a lock to start at center again. I also think Gus Chase will see a ton of time at the 4 and possibly the 3. Hasquet will obviously play a ton. My hope is Vanderjagt will redshirt although I'm not sure this will be part of the equation given the fact he is coming from a foreign country and may not want to spend 5 years going to college. He is extremely tall and would give some teams trouble when trying to defend him inside or go to the basket. However, he looks at this point to be a weight room candidate and if he is willing to redshirt, I think it would work out best. I'd like to see Rundles redshirt. Martin and Ellis are both points and played that position in the scrimmages. With Ellis being a senior, I think redshirting Rundles makes some sense. Also, Swift looks way capable of playing some point. To me, Graves looks ready to go right away. He is really quick and gets to the basket in a hurry. He is extremely confident on the court and looks like he could easily play some point. Sims is also a redshirt possibilty (I think). I don't know how playing prep school ball factors in to this. I really didn't get a good feel for Sims based on what I saw. He is extremely athletic. Remember, this is based on watching just part of one informal scrimmage session so I could be way wrong on a lot of my observations. :twocents:

We wont miss a beat without Larry

nor will we sweep the big sky. portland state, northern arizona and eastern washington have too much talent for that to happen. remember, we got to the big dance the past two years by winning the playoffs, not the regular season.

thanks for your analysis, g.w. i felt either rundles or graves needed to play this year, but assumed rundles was the guy since he's a three-star recruit. i'm glad to hear we have a true point, and happy to hear we've got some real quicks in graves. those are two musts in college basketball. we haven't had either in the backcourt since shane christiansen. martin is not super-quick, and ellis is too small to handle some of the bigger quicker point guards. if graves can step right in, that will be huge. he's listed at 6'2". as for sims, he's been lauded for his defensive ability. we need somebody who can check stuckney.

Sweeping any conference is near impossible regardless of how good or bad teams are. Coaches and players just know one another better. Conference play is even more important and focused on when it comes to 1 bid conferences such as the Big Sky. Why can't we play WAC or Mountain West for basketball and stay 1AA in football? Oh well such is life. I will go check out a few open gyms over the next few weeks, but the recent evaluations are pretty similar to ones I gave this summer. WOW, it is awesome to be talking positive about Grizzly basketball and having high expectations with it. As the coaches say "It is a great day to be a GRIZ!"

I agree sweeping the Sky is unrealistic. Couldn't help being excited about our team this year. For those of you that can attend rat ball and practices, thank you for your continued observations.

Yes, Chavez played. There were at least 16 players there. Contrary to what I said in the first post in this thread, there are 17 players on the team. Charlie Cox is not listed on the roster, so he makes 17. He was playing too.
