$800K law scholarship gift the biggest in UM history

MISSOULA - The University of Montana received the largest outright gift in its history, and it's designed to get Bobcats to become Grizzlies. Great Falls trial lawyer Alexander "Zander" Blewett III and his wife, Andy, gave UM $800,000 that will create the Blewett Scholars Fund.

The fund will provide three scholarships to incoming students who have first earned bachelor's degrees from Montana State University in Bozeman. The Fund will encourage more MSU graduates to continue their education at UM.

Each scholarship will pay for half of the recipients' School of Law tuition and be renewable for the duration of the three-year program.

I recognize their generosity but find the fact that students who earned their degree at UM as undergraduates are ineligible to be ridiculous.

People said critieria for their donations all the time. This one doesn't seem unusual to me.

Blewitt went to MSU. Wrestled. Then UM law. His sons, who are lawyers, went to Harvard and UM, and another eastern undergrad and UM. Both played football in college. Blewitt is a very good lawyer, now a plaintiffs lawyer. Has been generous to MSU, as well as to high school wrestling in GF.

Blewitt had this recent $4 million victory in a Missoula court. http://missoulian.com/news/local/jury-awards-nearly-m-to-man-injured-by-log-at/article_2ef7e07e-7f0c-11e3-ad67-001a4bcf887a.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Blewitt also had this case. This is how some CA people can get treated in MT courts, so watch out, LA. The plaintiff went to high school with Blewitt. MT Sup Ct reduced the judgement from $21 million to $11 million. http://expertpages.com/news/art_expert_awarded_11_million.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you live in GF you know what kind of guy Zander is. Fierce competitors don't
often turn out to be "good" guys but he really is. The list of good deeds done by he
and his wife is long and you won't find better people, anywhere. Good thing they
hang out here because he sure makes GF and Montana as a whole a better place.

UM needs this and lots of private support as regents appear to be hell bent on a level of financial support that hurts our flagship school.

A level? Surely that would mean state financial support for higher education has found its angle of repose. It has not.

Sure, I know donors set criteria all the time. I just wonder why they don't make it a 50-50 split. Completely excluding UM students for a UM scholarship is a little backwards to me.

He's doing it for students like he once was. It will help a lot of kids out, this is a good thing.
