Sat night MVP

I vote Senior Guard Virgil Mathews as the EWU game MVP for Montana: 18 pts, 10 assists

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matthews scored 15 of his 18 points in the final 15 minutes as the Grizzlies rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat Eastern Washington 78-72 in a Big Sky Conference game.

Matthews dished out 10 assists in addition to his scoring.

Matthews scored 10 of Montana's final 19 points as the Grizzlies pulled away.

The Griz and Matthews blunted every charge the Eagles mounted over the final few minutes. Eastern crawled within 66-65 on a pair of free throws by Deuce Smith with 3:38 to play, but Matthews came right back with a layup at the other end....

...(later on) After Stuckey made a free throw, Matthews applied the dagger. Strait missed a fall-away jumper at the end of the shot clock, but Matthews snuck in along the baseline and scored the put-back, making it 72-66 with 1:28 remaining. The Griz pulled away from there.

“He left right in front of me on the bench, snuck around and tipped it in,” Krystkowiak said. “That's Virgil, just not giving up on a play. It was a huge, huge play.”

Other players in my consideration:

Andrew Strait, 19 pts, 9 rebounds
Kevin Criswell, 15 pts, 7 rebounds

Another nice game (timely 2nd half 3 pointer and also 17 ft jump shot) for Stuart Mayes, 11 pts (career high)

I will go with Stuart Mayes. He came off the bench and hit several key shots, and also played some pretty good D on Stuckey down the stretch.

Why not Co-MVP's, Mayes and Mathews were both huge!

Mayes - when he came in during the 2nd half he shut down Stuckey and froze up the EWU offense. He hit a 3 pointer to bring the game to within 3 and didn't he hit a 2 a few series later to give the Griz their first lead of the game? Mayes caused a 5 second violation on Stuckey and grabbed 4 rebounds, 2 on offense, to spark the come back and take the lead.

Virgil would definatley be the honorable mention, but if you look back at who started the momentum and helped the Griz take the lead and hold it, I would hand the MVP to Mayes.

Re/Max,

Keep in mind Mathews scored 15 of his points in the last 15 minutes. Criswell even mentioned Mathews 3 from 25 feet as HUGE in the post game interview. They were both awesome and the rest of the team hit the boards hard, which was an area the EWU coach was concerned with in his comments. Great win for the Griz, we are keeping pace with NAU and they have some tough road games ahead of them.

Good point GB1,

How great is that game in and game out debates on egriz are about who was the MVP of the game. This year's team is great, I hope they keep riding the momentum!!

The first half was so ugly, I had my head turned for most of the second.

So... think I'll go with the announcement. I mean lack thereof. Sort of like: "Who won the N.D. beauty contest? Nobody."

Not very nice, huh?
