santa clara: a tale of two halves

first half: woody allen said of california, first you mellow, then you rot, and you could tell from the start the ladies had been spending too much time in california. santa clara drained their first three three's, and our perimiter defense was, well, rotten. i doubt one of them could have spelled rebound, let alone grab one. box out? must be some dance step. just a bunch of big ole lethargic country girls out there, lumbering up and down the court. why, even mandy was a disappointment. they say the great players let the game come to them, but i doubt the game could have found mandy. she sat out a good stretch late in the first half, during which our subs played pretty well. tam hit some shots early, then britney lohman was a spark off the bench, scoring about eight points, and we left the floor at half up a point. in short: a miracle.

second half: oh! so that's mandy morales! she, ah, well, she just took over the game. drives, dishes, always finishing or getting fouled...she was absoutely dominant. at some point, santa clara became rattled, got several technicals, and mandy did not miss one free throw in what seemed umpteen attempts. she wound up with about 30, and we won going away, 98-72. since the game started 9-0 for santa clara, that means that after the slow start, we outscored them by 35. to beat any santa clara team on their home court by that many is quite an accomplishment.

notable: the papers said britney lohman had a breakout game at northridge, and that continued tonight. i don't know her stats, but this young lady is gaining confidence, and she can play. several relatives including her mom and dad were in the stands throwing tomatoes at her (just kidding)...sonya rogers quick and accurate on threes...lauren beck will be a star once she convinces herself she is...sorta reminds me of pistol pete maravich...tam, kept us in the game early with a deft outside shooting touch...i remain the anguished seeker, looking for my inner city, but even without that, this team is deep, this team is talented, and mandy gives us either the best or one of the best players on the floor any time she's out there. i don't see how the big sky copes with the lady griz this year, just hope we get higher than a 15 seed.

Mandy had a career high 35. and 3 other ladies were in Double figures. I believe Mandy was 18-18 from the line and 8-12 from the field with 7 assists. Lohman had 17 I believe, Closson and Guardipee also in Double figures. No problem scoring the ball. Listening to Tom Stage call the game it sounded like SC completely lost it out there which is strange given all the Seniors they have. Selvig wasn't expecting this kind of game at all.

Santa Clara with three technicals, 1 DQ with three players with fours fouls each, 26 altogether for a 'home' team against a visiting team that got only eight fouls; that's remarkable. Sounds like someone really took the game to 'em.

An Selvig doesn't start a Senior!

I thought a player with two technicals would be ejected from the game; evidently Jenni Gottschalk had four fouls of which I'am assuming two were T's as ESPN reports but the box score over @ Foxsports shows no player ejected. ?

I know Lauren's father and consequently watched her play several times her last two years of high school. I haven't been able to get over to Missoula yet to watch her play. In high school I was struck by how fearless she was about everything she did. She seemed equally comfortable driving through traffic in the key or draining three-pointers. Does it look to you guys like she is now having confidence issues?

lauren just seemed tentative, that's all. santa clara pressed us most of the second half, and when mandy was in there, we handled it smoothly. but when she went out with three minutes to go, it started to give the subs a lot of trouble. lauren particularly would drive right into a double team or into a corner, then get tied up or have to call time out. offensively, there were several times it appeared she could get a shot, or drive to the basket, but wasn't sure if she should. i think she'll be very good once she has the confidence to know her role, and ability. she's got that lanky maravich build which is so perfect for basketball.
