A breakdown of Montana Grizzlies’ safeties prior to the 2024 season
Bobby Hauck, Ryder Meyer and Jaxon Lee break down this year's group of safeties on the second day of fall camp.
Lee is essentially a returning starter. He took over that spot late in the year and started the UNDSU game.Lee totaled 49 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, three passes defended, two interceptions and one fumble recovery last season, all career highs. He returned one fumble and one interception for a touchdown last year.
"At the end of the year, Jaxon was probably playing better than anybody in the back end, so good for him," Bobby Hauck said. "I thought that Jaxon came a million miles last year and really played well the second half of the season."
Arguably the best ball carrier on the defensive side of the ball.Lee is essentially a returning starter. He took over that spot late in the year and started the UNDSU game.
Lee was fourth in the Big Sky in interception return yards and led the league in average return yards. If he gets his hands on the ball, it’s going to be a party.
Lee was originally recruited as a running back after two state championships at P-burg and then transferring to Sentinel and starting them on their run of success as an RB.Arguably the best ball carrier on the defensive side of the ball.
Listening to Hauck talk, listening to Roger Cooper with Riley, and talking to the players, it’s very clear there’s a consensus that the coaching staff hit on basically every defensive transfer Montana added this off season. I think they expect huge contributions from particularly Pat Hayden and Andres Lehmann on the DL, Vai Kaho at LB, Gordon, Kenzel Lawler and probably Prince Ford on the secondary. The D has some new guys and holes to fill from last year, but the D seems to have good players and depth at all positions. I suppose it may take some time for them to get up to speed, playing well together, and able to react quickly and fly to the ball. Can't wait to see the first game and then the next few.
Thanks for the good info. I had to look up the last 2 mentioned. I briefly met some of the others over the summer, and they all seemed to be excited, wanted to get to Frisco and win, had multiple other good offers, and seemed like great kids. After seeing your post, it looks like there are even more of them than I realized.Listening to Hauck talk, listening to Roger Cooper with Riley, and talking to the players, it’s very clear there’s a consensus that the coaching staff hit on basically every defensive transfer Montana added this off season. Also won’t be surprised if Caleb Otlewski cracks the rotation up front.
The other new addition, who isn’t a transfer, who has a chance to play is Kyon Loud. He’s been the standout rookie on the defensive side of the ball all camp.
"I think we're a really physical group," Lee said. "A lot of times people look at safeties and they think they're just covering man and getting their in zone drops. But, I mean, we're fitting up the run and we're fitting up tight ends all the time, and we're messing them up too. We're not just fitting them up. So I think we're a really physical group."
