Sacred Heart Pioneers scouting report

I don’t like that we are playing this game. 1) This would have been a much preferred bye week instead of the first 2 weeks of the season and 2) I would rather play a Missouri Valley Conference team in the non conference but we already have 2 scheduled so if that is not an option I would prefer someone more regional even a Pioneer League team like San Diego or St. Thomas not someone from across the country.

I see it as a terrific game for both teams. Sacred Heart may or may not be good this year, but they have been good in recent years. This is part of what sport is about. I don’t know why you would complain about this game.

Some notes from the Sacred Heart side.

  • The Sacred Heart University football team is heading west for one of its biggest tests of the 2025 season, taking on No. 3 nationally ranked Montana on Saturday afternoon at Washington–Grizzly Stadium.
  • Saturday marks the first-ever meeting between Sacred Heart and Montana.
  • Sacred Heart (5–2) makes its first-ever trip to Missoula to face one of the FCS powerhouses the Montana Grizzlies (6–0, 3–0 Big Sky).
  • The Pioneers enter the weekend on the heels of a commanding 32–14 victory over Howard, where SHU scored 32 unanswered points and controlled all three phases of play.
  • Montana remains unbeaten through six games and boasts one of the top defenses in the nation, allowing fewer than 15 points per game at home.
  • Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. MT / 3:00 p.m. ET, and the game will stream live on ESPN+.
  • The Pioneers' receiving corps has proven to be a deep and dangerous group through seven games. Payton Rhoades leads the way with 23 catches for 295 yards and two touchdowns, while Kevin McGuire provides a spark with 269 yards with a season-best 41-yard grab. Jason Palmieri has emerged as a red-zone threat with three touchdown catches, including a 41-yard score.

Glad to see they feel like we need to be moved up in the rankings! Not sure who they have moved us past into #3.
Their "COMMANDING" win over Howard was a 14-3 deficit at halftime, whereas many of us view being down at half as a national, well maybe just a statewide, emergency. They didn't dominate in the first half for sure though and they struggled some initially containing the Howard RB out of the wildcat. That guy was no Michael Wortham, so I would expect to see that in the same manner as we have used it so far.
From what I saw, they aren't really a threat throwing deep, the longest gain on the day against Howard was 27 yards and that was off a pass that was about 11 yards from the line of scrimmage and one TD pass was for about 20 to a wide, wide open receiver five yards into the endzone.
Wortham and Brooks have more yards individually than their leading receiver and I would be more concerned with the QB running than letting him throw it.

I think anytime you see the visiting team pose for a picture in Wa-Griz then you know it's a big deal and a once in a lifetime opportunity for these kids.
I picture an old man sitting with his grandson and telling the story where the highlight is grandad played a game there. As soon as the volume goes up, grinnin' and skinnin' will be forgotten. Friends back home are noticing the 'steam coming up in the background and hoping our boys will be safe.'
They had a dusting of snow up in the West Kootenai a couple of nights ago, so maybe we can get some within eye view by morning so they can share a few more photos for their album.

I see this as a signal that the Pioneers will come out with their hair absolutely on fire. We can hope they will be TOO hyper and make mistakes, but the Griz better be ready to match their emotional intensity.
