This is just my opinion on the matter but ROOT Sports has done a fantastic job producing the games they air and honestly they're the best option we have out in the west. There isn't another larger sports network out west. And the ROOT Sports footprint isn't an issue. If you go to the ROOT Sports Southwest website, you'll see that they cover Big Sky football. So because of that, teams such as NAU and the California schools are in coverage are. The biggest reason why most of the big sky doesn't get TV time with ROOT Sports is because most teams' fanbases suck! It doesn't matter if Southern Utah won the conference for the first time ever, they're not going to see more than one televised game if all they average at home is 5,605 (2015 average). If that's all they can average, they don't have many more fans watching on tv. They had a total attendance of 28,027 for the entire year (6 games)! Let that sink in. ROOT Sports is a business and they want good tv ratings, and outside of the Northwestern schools, no other Big Sky teams have stepped up their game with attendance.
There is another solution. After the ROOT Sports contract expires, the Big Sky could try talking with ESPN and getting games on ESPN3 like the Missouri Valley Conference does. Then each Big Sky team gets equal playing Time on a major network. A lot of Griz fans will complain like they usually do with ESPN3 because they won't be able to figure out how to get ESPN3 (even though most of us now have access to it) but the rest of the Big Sky will benefit because most providers outside of Montana do carry ESPN3.
I guess it comes down to picking your poison. I personally enjoy ROOT Sports and feel they bring a better professional product to the conference than local stations or ESPN3. If other schools want to have tv time, they need to do a more consistent job with winning and have an increased sustainable attendance.
