Robert Horry says 2007 Spurs better than 80s Lakers, Celtics

Did anyone see or hear these comments? Horry claims the athletes today are much better than the old school NBA players. Bigger faster and more athletic. He claims in the olden days players always went to the right, kind of like me now when I play a pick up game.

Intersting conversation. I do think the Spurs would run circles around those skinny ball players from back in the day. But would they beat them?

There is NOBODY in the NBA today that could take Johnson, who was so versatile that he won titles at more than one position, including center. There's no center today who could stop Kareem's sky hook. And Worthy? Fugettaboutit.

And that's just Showtime. The Celtics? Well, Duncan would probably run circles around Parish. But Bird, Ainge, and McHale would absolutely DESTROY the current Spur guards.

Again, Horry is just blowing smoke out his you-know-what.

I thought Horry was a respectable, classy veteran player until he hip-checked Nash, and then didn't take responsibility for it and said Nash was an "actor" and fucked up that whole series. I'm not so sure they would have beat the Suns in that series if Phoenix goes up 3-2 like they should have and would have.

If one play goes another way, and the gypsy-rat Stern handles that quagmire like he should have, the Spurs might not have even made it to the Western Finals. Beating the over-achieving Utah Jazz and one-dimensional Cleveland Cavs doesn't impress me.

3 out of 5 is impressive on paper, but the Shaq and Kobe teams would have dismembered these dirty, buttfucking Spurs. :twocents:

I think Horry has a point and I think the Spurs of today could easily run with those dynasties of the 80s. I think their offensive gameplan is pretty similiar to some of the styles of that era and their defensive scheme would be enough to slow down a team led by Magic. they would be tough enough to run with the Bad Boys of Detroit and I have never really been that sold on the Celtics of that era being THAT great of a team.

Granted, they are not all HOFers (yet) but a line-up of Duncan, Ginobli, Parker, Bowen and Eva Longoria is a pretty damn good line-up. And having players like Finley, Barry and Horry in supporting roles is pretty nice too.

No way that the Spurs could roll with the Bulls of the 90s though, that team was just too loaded and that dynasty may be the greatest of all-time (they could have easily won 9 straight titles if Jordan hadn't decided to play baseball and the rested vets decided to come back for one last run during the lock-out season). Duncan could maybe get his agaisnt an inferior frontcourt but Chicago has the Spurs of today beat at every other position.

Celtics are the greatest dynasty in the history of basketball.

The Spurs are very solid but there is no way they could beat LA and Boston back in the 80's. They were too deep and they had better players. Parish or Walton would have handled Timmy.

The Bulls in the 90's were the best team in the 90's but they would have got beat down by either Celtics and Lakers teams of the 80's. I do think the current Spurs would have beat the Bullds in the 90's.

Cool thing is, we will never know.
