Robbie's Missed FG Return for TD - ESPN

So, if it's 99 yards, it was measured from where I picked up the ball. He fumbled 3 or 4 yards deep in the end zone. Exciting play. Some nice blocks. Todd had the last block, a great one.

Robbie's nifty running was great. But I was equally impressed by the blocking convoy the Griz went into. At the end, there were four or five blockers cruising along and not one Viking is sight.

I sensed that the Viking players were not situationally aware that it was a live ball and half-assed it. Hauck lined up normally and only when the PSU guys got in their stances did he drop back to the end zone.

In college football 100 yards is the longest possible TD statistically. It WOULD have only been a 100 yard TD if he didn't fumble it from the end-zone to the 1 yard-line. The NFL counts the yardage in the end-zone in such situations (Ed Reed has the record with 107 yard INT return), but college only allows 100 yards, so he missed having the longest TD in college history due to his muff.

Thanks. Same comment on where the run starts from. Where picked up, no where dropped. He probably holds record for longest kick return where the ball was first dropped.

I'll take a wild guess on why he wasn't recruited as a Wide Receiver.
Fun to watch, again, and again. :thumb:

The play probably does not happen if PSU does not jump offsides on the prior snap. Nice job, WAGriz. Take a bow; you deserve it.

Those five yards were critical in the total length of the attempted FG. I need to watch to see if RH was even back there for the first attempt. It’s like PSU not only stepped on their own [insert male appendage], but also they warned us ahead of time they were going to step on their own [insert male appendage].

Perfect storm. BH talked about how they practice that play almost every week but never got a chance to do it in a game.

Ok, not to buzz kill this whole awesome accomplishment at all. However, Robby did drop the ball and then picked it up to run. Can he advance it, if he dropped it. . .technically? Isn't a kick an offensive play? So. . .wouldn't it be somewhat similar to a long pass? So. . .if it gets dropped the ball is dead. . .correct? I could be wrong but was looking for this ruling and didn't find anything. I saw you can pick it up from a bounce and a catch, but not sure about a catch and drop. Just causing problems, I think :) Or not. . .
Regardless, it was very heads up. Just not sure if it was technically allowable after the player drops it.

My understanding is it's more akin to a fumble.

Actually, after I typed this, it occurred to me I might be overthinking. It should be looked at more like a very deep "block" If it is knocked out of the air the ball can be advanced. So. . .it winds up being much more like that. Sorry for thinking out loud on this thread. :)

It's treated the same as a punt or kickoff, so it can be returned even if fumbled while trying to catch it.

As I recall, the announcers specifically noted that his knee did not touch when he went down for the ball.

You're probably right, Grady.

Montana takes missed FG to the house - ESPN Video
https://www.espn.com.au/video/clip/_/id/34658648

It was shown on Sport Centers Top 10 Plays. It was #7.

Had a great Mo Club reference lead in prior the highlight, by anchor Neil Everett.

I'll joke with you too, just like his uncle Tim did during the broadcast. The dropped football is more proof that Robbie won't catch Tim's INT mark! LOL

I wonder if Robbie has a nick-name in the locker room. "Thumbs" might be a good one. All in good fun. :thumb:
