Rob Ash

It would be hard to argue that one of the best linemen in Griz history is from Whitefish.
Who are you referring to I am guessing Thatcher Szalay since he is the only NFL player from Whitefish? I honestly don’t remember or know who that is. I started watching the Griz when Craig Ochs joined the team which it looks like was not long after Szalay left. The best offensive lineman when I was at UM was Will Poehls. He was a senior when I was a freshman and you could tell he was an NFL man among boys at that point. He was 6’8 and pushing 350 pounds.

ash's record vs hauck 2.0's. note that he had a better overall and conference winning % than hauck does. did he have some bad seasons? sure, but then again, so did hauck. ash also won the bsc outright once, and tied for first twice.

In his second stint at Montana (2018-present), Bobby Hauck's record is
58-24 overall with a 32-16 Big Sky record through 2024, while Rob Ash's time at Montana State (2007-2015) yielded a 49-23 conference record (68.1% win rate) within his tenure, making him one of the top Big Sky coaches by winning percentage during his era.
If bad Defense in combination with losses to the Griz was the reason Ash was fired looking at Bobby's current trajectory (2-6 and a Defense that is giving up too many Big plays and incapable of stopping the top teams we need to beat) I'm starting to think next year might be a do or die year for Bobby. Especially since it's the last year on his current contract.

Careful, some on here don't like facts.

It’s difficult because I don’t think the problem is Bobby. The issue is Bobby not willing to change the people or schemes around him.

So that ultimately is Bobby. 😂
Agreed Badlands…I too agree to a certain extent that Hauck isn’t the problem specifically. Everyone knows Phenice and Pease are pass first Offensive Coaches, and are good ole boys just like their Head Coach..and the O-line is recruited for their preferences…But Hauck is the Head Coach responsible for the hiring, as well as firing that comes with the territory as a head coach..…if HE and staff can consistently score 55 points no matter who the GRIZ play, and somehow keep and rest the light defense on the sideline, the GRIZ will win Championships. I just think that’s a pretty far fetched way to do it.
We need to be able to control the clock on offense, and rest our light but quick tough assed 3- front D-line..or scrap it..
When the GRIZ have the ball and Gillman and the O-line sets us up at 2nd down and two yards to go..we need to get the first down in that scenario period… or leave the defense front averaging 250 lbs out there for 4 quarters with those 310 refrigerators on the other side..
Being able to control the clock weather you wish to score or not, wins championships…🦬

Wishing the Coaching Staff and All fans Griz a Merry Christmas and a successful 2026.

GO GRIZ!

So 13 wins is a "fair share of games?" How many times did Ash do that?
Sacred heart, idaho state, central washington, Portland state, weber, eastern washington, Indiana state...a cadaver wins those games. North Dakota puked on themselves. You got 2 good wins in the playoffs. That's what Bobby can get you.

Oddly enough, he was a tennis player, had great feet, was nasty, and played in the NFL.

Ash was fired after one losing season.

Great quote from MSU athletic director when Ash was fired that Haslam can copy. Ash Fired
"We're not going to win the championship every year, but we should be in the mix every year," Fields said. "With the resources that we put into it, we should."

Something interesting in regards to Ash is that he was brought in to clean up the Cats reputation after it came out they were running a coke ring while no one else in the Big Sky besides Bobby 1.0 was really trying so of course before Rob Ash arrived Hauck was running the Big Sky. Big whoop you were good when the only peer level program was running a cocaine ring.

Well with that being the bar we’re already there.
