Wild that there's a thread about Sac State beating NAU at halftime in women's hoops and not a thread about Montana-Montana State basketball.....

Honest question: Has basketball interest declined and if so, why? ? We've been mulling it over. Not just a UM or state of Montana or Big Sky question. Waning interest in a lot of places....

Regarding the apparent decline in interest/attendance, is this a trend that y'all are noticing on a national level, or is the scope of your inquiry more local/regional? Personally, I couldn't care less what's happening in the major conferences (on the men's side, at least). As with many, I've been paying more and more attention to the goings-on of the women. Caitlin Clark has had something to do with this, but it just seems that the storylines around WBB are more interesting and compelling than what's on offer for the men. This doesn't perfectly apply to how I feel about the Griz/Lady Griz...but I might be kinda getting there. For me, it may have something to do with the futility of it all. The Griz are never gonna win a NC, or even get close. At some point, you get tired of being the nail...
I actually wouldn't be opposed to an FCS/FBS-style separation of programs. Treat it like we treat football, with the mid-majors having their own take on March Madness. This isn't a fully-formed idea (and I'm sure far from original), but...what am I missing? I'd much rather watch the Griz play SDSU (or whoever) in a mid major final four contest than get a 15 seed and get thrashed by the Duke's of the world...

So you are a fan of dropping to D2, because the big boys won't subsidize a second division of D1 basketball.

Do the "big boys" of football subsidize the FCS? Honest question, that. I have no idea how revenues from the upper reaches may be spread around in various ways to the benefit of smaller programs. My intuitions are that that sort of "trickle down" economics is unlikely, but, again, I don't know. I think that you (HHB) are far more plugged in/interested/knowledgeable on these matters, and I'll certainly defer to that. Maybe a more distilled version of my question would be to simply ask why an FBS/FCS means of organizing competition works well for football, but wouldn't work for basketball? All of the same "move up" potential would be in place for those schools looking for bigger and better things, and the playing field would be far more level come national tournament time.

A thread about Sac State win over NAU on a Thursday of rivalry week meaning NO Montana teams playing, three week from the tournament when every standing matters, is representative of an avid fan not one with declining interest.

I think lack of posts about basketball more representative of the incessant criticisms than a measure of declining fandom.
