Heard today that John Lands died in January. He was probably before most you you guy's time. But he was one of my Griz heros growing up in Missoula in the 50's. Receiver in football, threw the Javelin in track, and also was on the basketball team. He was drafted by the LA Rams in 1959, but chose to finish his degree. Played pro for the Winnepeg Blue Bombers and several semi-pro teams.

Freaky that his post showed up this morning. For some reason before falling asleep last night I got on a nostalgia kick, and one of my all time favorite memories came to mind. Having grown up in Missoula back in the 50's and 60's and living on Keith Ave., I was ALWAYS at the old Dornblaser stadium for football games, and the then brand new "Field House" for basketball games, and the old Campbell Field for baseball games. Remembering when the Griz were part of the old "Skyline" Conference I believe, one Saturday they were playing New Mexico. I vividly remember a long pass play being completed to John Lands for a Griz touchdown. I'm thinking maybe we won that game, but don't know for sure. I can still see that play, like it was yesterday. Thanks for the memories John Lands, and rest in peace.

I think the game you referred to was the New Mexico Lobos in the early 60s, they came into this game highly favored. The final score was 40 to 8 thanks to guys like John Lands and Bob Obilovich and maybe Terry Dillon although that game may have been the year before Terry Dillon was on the varsity because in those days Freshmen could not be on the varsity. I was a student at the time and have a vivid memory of that game because New Mexico was so favored that this was a big upset at a time when wins for the Griz were few and far between in the old skyline conference.

With all due respect, I don't think so. I'm fairly sure that John Lands graduated in like 1960, which would have meant his last year of football was 1959 or so. I'm thinking the game I mentioned was in 1957 or 58. As I recall, it was a very close game, which the Griz won like 21-14 or something. It was pre-Dillon I am sure, and Obilovich must have been a Frosh or Soph, as I don't think he was the quarterback that day. Also, he was my student teacher for Health & PE my senior year in high school at MCHS in 1963-64. Fun trying to remember all this stuff, even if it is a bit foggy! :thumb:
