Sad news today for all Bay Area Griz fans who watched games at Ricky's Sports Bar in San Leandro.
The owner, Ricky Ricardo, died yesterday.
Ricky was a class act, and he particularly took to Griz fans, themselves a class act anywhere they go. He greeted each of us by name, and set up our games in the best areas of the bar.
I was there with a packed room of full-throated Griz fans the day Marc Mariani brought us back against South Dakota in a playoff game, and remember vividly the Cat game where Kris Heppner kicked a last-second field goal to pull out a miracle last-second victory.
I know many Montana residents visiting or passing through the Bay Area watched games at Ricky"s. It was voted the #2 sports bar in America by Sports Illustrasted.
More sadness: They've been closed through the pandemic, and are near bankruptcy.
