Replays and Challenges

Can someone please help me understand why the 4th and 17 was not reviewed automatically, or probably more importantly, challenged by Hauck and staff?

They had a challenge there and I beleive a spot is a challengeable call, correct? If they challenge and are wrong, so what they lose one of the 3 timeouts they had at that point. Plus, this happened right in front of them. If anyone had a tremendous view of a bad spot, it was Bobby and staff. It was at an insanely crucial part of the game, too, and it led to a TD to make it even more interesting. That call being challenged and overturned ends the game and crushes any momentum UNI had been gaining. It was s real head scratcher.

One more....the tipped ball that (watching live at least) looked like a UM interception easily. The refs don’t look at it and no one challenges it. Was that a clear interception or did he not pick it cleanly? That was another head scratcher to me.

We were asking the same thing last night. Is it only in conference play when they seem to keep stopping the game and picking everything apart?

Maybe BSC made some changes since last season on reviews?

Not sure on the 4th and 17 since my video cut out and I only had audio then but the interception would not have been overturnable from the replay. Not conclusive enough.

I thought I heard the head ref at the end of the first half when Bobby took the last time out that this would end the coaches challenges. But I don't know if he meant for the game or for just the first half.

First half. Since the GRIZ were then out of TOs, they had no ability to challenge in that half.

Correct. He had another challenge in his pocket in the 2nd half and specifically had 3 TOs left when he could have used it for this specific bad spot call. Call would have been overturned and they keep challenge. More importantly....game over, no more momentum, and much less ass puckering from this guy and 25,000 with me!

Maybe, but I actually enjoyed the fact that the players had to dig deep, refocus and gut out a win. I think that reinforces attention to detail and execution a helluva lot more than a blowout! I believe it will pay dividends down the stretch. Bring on hardship, bring on the pressure! A diamond isnt made by laying around and frolicking in a field of daisies in the afternoon sunshine. A diamond is made via immense pressure. I think the players, coaches, and fans prefer diamonds to daisies, wouldnt you agree? I'm very happy Bobby's back, and along with him- GRIZ football. Go Bobby, and thank you Haslam! And GO GRIZ!!

Dude that was darn near poetic. Okay I’m pumped!

Although I honestly prefer a freaking blowout (less stressful on me, and that's all that matters) I was thinking last night, although the second half was very different, we didn't essentially fall apart and give up.

We just had to buckle down and although it wasn't pretty at times, you are 100% right about these kids getting a lesson on fighting till the end for the win.

They review crew needs a few seconds to watch the replay and then notify the refs on the field if they see something reviewable. UNI quickly snapped the ball before the review crew saw a replay (obviously). This is where Hauck needs to call a Time-out and give the review team time to see an obviously terrible spot. I blame Hauck equally with the refs. They both blew it!

Zirg is 100% correct. They both blew it. If the players blow an assignment, I expect them to get called out on it (not publicly, natch). Knowing when to use your coaches' reviews and timeouts is what Hauck is responsible for. Maybe BW or someone will ask him about that decision at QB Club or on the coaches' show.

If I remember correctly Hauck & company had the same scenario back in 2009 App state game. Should have called a time out after an App State fumble. Time to get it together coach! This could have cost the Griz the game.
