Referees at UM Games

I am brand new to this board and have stolen the "grizenvy" tag because I thought it was a great statement about how others view the GRIZ.
My question is does anyone know if there is commiittee that reviews the work of referees after a game is over and what is done about some of the horrible calls. Two momentum swinging bad calls were made in Bozo that someone should be held accountable for. One might argue that there was at least one makeup call by the refs in the 4th quarter against "state" when the game was essentially over.
I have been a Griz fan for over 35 years and it just seems to me that since we have become the premier program in 1AA there is a continuing effort by officials to level the playing field with bad calls against the Griz.
Most games are on TV and recorded by those of us who don't get enough by being there so there is ample evidence available. Seems as though there should be a venue by which to present examples for the body of folks who rate these guys. Does anyone know of one?

It is my understanding that there is a review process, altho I don't recall how it works. I believe the game tape is sent to a conference review person/committee and the head referee of the particular game, on the Monday following the game. After that, I assume there's some sort of process of reviewing/grading the refs. I assume someone out there must have a better understanding than I, and I too would be interesting in learning more.

The BSC coaches grade the officials after every game. The results go the head of officiating and the league office. Playoff assignments are based on this grading (although I don't know if it is by crew or by individual. I believe it is individual).

If there is a complaint, the league will review the tape, and can even punish an official.

HOWEVER, the coaches are VERY reluctant to file a complaint because they know (1) it won't change the call, and (2) referees have very long memories, and the coaches know they will see those refs again in the very near future.

By the way, there is a BSC official from Missoula who graded out the highest of any BSC ref last year.

Someone should probably send this question to the BSC for a definitive answer http://www.bigskyconf.com/qa_front.asp

If coaches are responsible for grading the refs, then that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Naturally a coach will think about retribution before giving a ref poor marks. I would be interested to know if this is actually how it is done also.

The 3rd qtr missed fumble call by the refs was a critical call that could have changed the Griz/Cat game. I saw a replay and it was clearly a fumble that was recovered by the Griz and could have stopped a Cat drive that ended up as a TD, and the fumble was in Cat territory, so Griz likely could have easily moved a few yards to kick a field goal or even to get a TD themselves. Take away one Cat TD and give Griz a field goal or a TD and the Griz win.

With that said, bad calls are part of the game, but I believe this bad call may have cost the Griz the game.

There was an article on the internet around two maybe three weeks ago about a whole officiating crew being suspended for a game or two because of a poor job. I think it might have been a Utah game but I can't remeber the details. I was just amazed that they actually did something.

let me get this straight....so your excuse this year is that the refs lost the game for you?

I think you're right, the refs wanted to see the grizzlies lose. They were against you the whole game, and in fact had their bobcat underwear on underneath their uniforms. There wasn't a single call that went against the cats, and not a single call went for the griz. The whole game was fixed.

I was going to come on here to wish you all a happy turkey day and good luck this weekend, but if you are sulking blaming the loss on the officials rather than the coaching staff, you are living in a fantasy world.

Happy thanksgiving to everyone who realizes that there is more to life than grizzley football, and to those who are able to accept a win gracefully as well as a loss. To everyone else who think the refs lost the game for the griz....BITE ME

wbtfg, I don't think anyone is saying that the reason the Griz lost was because of the officiating. The cats had a couple of bad calls go against them in that game too. Grizranger is just saying that these officials make calls that they are really not in a position to make. If you can't see the play you got no right making a call on it, which is what happened with the fumble call. And officials should be called out on all bad calls including the 2 bad calls against the cats, not just the ones that go against the Griz. Nothing pisses me off more than when officials end up deciding a game and not the players, I don't believe that happened in the Griz/cat game, but I have seen it in other games.

All I am saying is to look at the Cats fumble on videotape. Refs said fumble was caused by hitting the ground, and you can clearly see that the ball was fumbled well before the runner hit the ground, and the ball was recovered by the Griz. If there had been instant replay Griz would have recovered the ball in Cat territory. That was a bad call that could have changed the game.

If you disagree that is fine. I acknowledge that bad calls are part of the game, and we don't have instant replay, but I wish that refs that blow big calls like this would at least get reprimanded. There were likely other bad calls that went both ways, but the videotape is incontrovertible proof of this bad call, and as far as I can see this was a critical bad call We can all speculate as to what would have happened if the correct call was made by the ref. My speculation is that the game could have changed significantly. If there was a clear Griz fumble recovered by the Cats that was miscalled I would expect that Cats fans would complain and speculate as well.

I do give credit to the Cats for the fine kickoff return by Smith and the interception return for a TD by the Cats DB. Those were big plays by the Cats that won the game for them. Where were the big plays like that for the Griz?

In any case I wish the hate in this heated Griz-Cat rivalry would subside and we all just rooted for our team and did not disrespect the other team, or their fans (and at times I can reprimand myself for violating this). I give credit to Kramer for resurrecting a competitive Cat football program, which in the long run is better for both Universities.

Oh well, wait 'till next year, or if we both get lucky in the playoffs---December 20th in Chatanooga!
