Does anybody have any idea about how much some of these referee's make for doing a bowl game?

They are paid $1500 per game for a BCS game and $1200 for the others. They also receive expenses, per diem, gifts, tickets, lodging.

QuestionCan you give me an idea of how much college officials are paid for their work? I would be curious to know how much difference there is between the major colleges and Division 1AA (FCS) Thanks in advance...Chris

Answer
Chris
Thanks for the question. The Game fee varies from conference to conference and level to level. At the Division 1AA (FCS) level the game fee are as low as $105/game for some Pioneer league, independent and Great West games. The conferences allow the member schools to assign the officials and and negotiate the game fee. Other conferences like the Big Sky or Southland conference pay similar to the D-1A (BCS) level-$500-$600 per game plus per diem and travel. Thus the official could be paid up to $780/game. Thus the range for the Division 1AA (FCS)level is vast from $105 - $780.

The Division 1A (BCS) level is different with much higher salaries and all conference assign their own officials. The officials at this level are all paid a game fee, per diem and either given a travel stipend or travel is arranged for them. The game fees vary here too from a low of $500/game to as much as $980/game.

Many Division 1AA (FCS) conferences do have a supervisor of officials and will pay their officials in the range of $375-$500. Most Div.1A BCS conferences pay in the range of $675-$800. So as you can see there is about a $300 game fee difference.

Chris, Thank you for the kind words and the rating. It is much appreciated.
Best of luck,
Vic Winnek

My guess is that Bowl games pay more.

Correction. The numbers I posted were for last season. The pay has increased to $1800 for BCS and $1500 for the other bowl games, plus the misc fees and expenses.

Figured, however, I still thought it'd be more.

FYI, I have three friends from Billings that work the Frontier. How fun would it be to travel to La Grande, OR (Eastern Oregon) for a game. (j/k) $100-$125 for the game.

(They all have dream of being in the BSC. Two of them have been to several annual meetings in Park City, UT, never got to work there yet.)

I remember HS officials telling me their mileage checks were bigger than the game checks.

Those Big Sky officials should be paying us the fans, by paying for all the beer at the GSA tailgate, for the great seats they get every week.

I think they should put Bullseyes on their backs for when the NEZ crazies peg the ball back after the PAT. If the fan hits the Ref, free beer. j/k, sorta :thumb:

If you think big sky conference officials are bad, there is a major crisis brewing in Montana high school football. There is a serious shortage of officials for high school games. You will start to see games scheduled for every day of the week so they have enough officials to cover the games. On some games the youngest guy is 60. If you want to be a high school official in Montana, you are almost guaranteed to pass the test and get a job.

While there is a crisis, there is also a terrible buddy network working against younger officials. As in most things in life, depends on the area you live in and who you know. That said, some pools are terrible and won't change until some guys start retiring...

EXACTLY.

I umpired Legion baseball for 15 yrs. I got talked into doing FB (which I thought would be fun) and what a fuggin joke. I went to the 1st meeting (preseason) and walked out about 1/2 way thru it. The politics were horrible. Until the old guys who can't work retire, there will be a shortage. I know a few that would like to work but won't because of the personel.

This is true in some areas, but Missoula definitely has an advantage with so many schools in the area. Younger officials are able to work quite a few games, if they choose.
