Redshirts?

With 14 players on the roster there are most likely going to be at least 2 redshirts. Who will they be, any ideas?

I figure Moikobu, Stockton, and Ward will be redshirting.

I too think we will redshirt Moikobu, Stockton, and Ward. We will go with 11 and hope for no injuries. Here is how I think the primary rotation will be with the minutes at each position listed in order by position. With that said, if we can get big leads now and then I will not be surprised a few variations to experiment.

C- Qvale, Selvig, Hasquet, Sharp
PF- Hasquet, Sharp, Selvig
SF- McGillis, Vassy, Taylor, Hurley
SG- Staudacher, Johnson, Taylor, McGillis
PG- CET, Taylor, Johnson

Experimental lineups/combos
BIG/Rebounding: PG-Taylor, SG-McGillis, SF-Hasquet/Selvig, PF- Selvig/Hasquet, C-Qvale
Small/Pressure: PG-CET, SG-Johnson, SF-Taylor, PF-McGillis, C-Hasquet/Selvig
Perimeter/3 ball: PG-Johnson, SG-Staudacher, SF- Taylor, PF- McGilis, C-Hasquet/Selvig
Defense: PG-CET, SG-Johnson, SF-Vassy/McGillis, PF- McGillis/Selvig, C- Qvale

Apologies to Sharp, he is a solid player that has great attitude, athletic, and versatile. He has no major weakness, yet has no major strength. With that said though, he can fill in nicely with any of the lineups and can play 3, 4, and 5. Sharp will see minutes in the normal rotation and will be huge contributor.

As for Hurley, I see him proving himself with sparse minutes this and next year. However, I hope he gets rotation minutes in 2 years.

I feel that McGillis and Hasquet will be the only players seeing more than 25 minutes per game consistently. There will be 10 players seeing playing time most games. Aside from McGillis and Hasquet the other 8 will all be 8 to 20 minutes apiece. Those minutes will be given based on opposition and who is feeling it or not. I do think Johnson will see major minutes too more often than not. As the season progresses I expect Selvig to gradually pick up minutes.

All I know is that we have 10 players deserving of minutes that are more than capable. I pray Tinks can allocate the minutes to keep everyone happy. I am sure this is the better problem to have compare to the past 2 years.

Sharp will get good minutes this year, because, except for natural talent and/or size, he is a better player than Qvale and Selvig. No knock on Qvale or Selvig. Both improved. Qvale will learn to be an even a bigger and more consistent force in the middle. Selvig is going to be a big plus. He is a good passer, among his other talents. Sharp can score from inside and outside, can rebound, and plays within himself.

McGillis, along with Hasquet, will be the best player day in and day out. Johnson is going to be a great player. He has more natural talent than anyone on the team. Taylor is going to add alot. He is smart, tough, doesn't make mistakes, passes well, plays good D, and can shoot and score. I assume that Hasquett will have numerous great games, will make big plays and will pick up the slack when necessary.

CET will be very good and better than last year. Staudacher is back in his natural no. 2 position, will not have to work to defend 3's and post-ups, and can spend his energy getting open and knocking down 3's.

Banny is athletic and can certainly defend. I guess that's what they want him to do. However, he can also go to the hoop.

One more thing, I think we're going to like the small lineup with McGillis at the 4.

Ward is certainly capable of playing this year and contributing. Don't know what they'll do with him. Stockton is a terrific point guard, great passer and very good defender. I think he put the ball in the hoop too. Assume they'll redshirt him, because they have 3 other guys who can play point.

Hurley is stuck on a very good team. He's a good player too. I assume Diggs is a redshirt.

This team is very talented and deep. If they can keep a good attitude and keep at it, they will go far.

Playerrep, I too like the small line up with McGillis at the 4. Granted he is not as tall as a team likes at the 4. However, he is strong and can leap out of the gym. He can hold his own defensively in the paint and rebound too. This year's lineup is a big plus for Qvale. Everyone is capable of playing outside. He can have the paint all to himself on offense. Defensively we have enough talent and defense to funnel the opposition to the paint for him or Selvig to swat shots frequently!

I don't see Jack as a 4. He needs to be on the perimeter, both offensively and defensively, but especially defensively. He's a playmaker. Look for lots of steals and dunks at the other end. Also some threes at key moments in the game. Should get the crowd fired up with some athleticism that we didn't see last year. I haven't seen either of the exhibitions, but I suspect we've gotten a taste already.

Ward will probably redshirt because he missed 3-4 week swith Mono. If he had remained healthy they would not have redshirted Mathias. In the long run, that may turn out to be the best anyway.

Tinks said that Stockton has made some good progress in the last couple of weeks and will be a contributer this year. He also said that Mathias getting mono might have played into the equation alittle but more than likely would have redshirted any way.

With another year of getting bigger and stronger for Mathias and Digs the future looks bright for the Griz and them.

That would mean Stockton is active. That surprises me some.

Curious as to whether Tinkle wanted to redshirt Stockton but Stockton did not want to sit out a year.

I am also curious as to whether Tinks wanted to redshirt Stockton. Depth wise it looked to make sense but he does bring alot of toughness and winning attitude to the team.

The kid doesn't look like much, but he plays on the winning team. Tough competitor who gets the job done. So if you are interested more in results than flash, he's your guy. If not, pass on him.

Anyone who has followed Griz hoops for more than a couple seasons would know that MANY freshmen look like crap as freshmen. If you remember Scott Zanon, Jeremy Lake, Mike Warhank, Kirk Walker, Matt Kempfert, etc, they all messed the floor of dahlberg as freshmen, and they ALL became ALL CONFERENCE players. Stockton has all the tools to do the same. I am not the least bit worried about his development.

personal issues aside, this move doesn't make much sense to me, given the depth and versatility we already have at the point--e.t., taylor, even johnson. the future arrives fast in college athletics; four even five years goes by in a flash. if you don't absolutely need him this year, doesn't it make sense to save him for a fifth year when he could team up with digs and ward and really be a dynamite player?

then, too, we griz fans have been a bit traumatized lately by poor redshirt decisions, starting with jefferson heidelberger in football, where he (and we) lost an entire year for one brief appearance in a game at sac state. or the austin swift decision. whether or not he would ever have amounted to anything, his true freshman year was a total waste for very few minutes. and finally, we have the example of qvale last year, where we traded an inexperienced injury-plagued freshman year for what could have a much more fully productive year down the road. you can say all this is 20-20 of course, but once we know the past, are we destined to always repeat it?

Coaches cannot FORCE a redshirt on a student athlete.

I believe it was Stu Starner who once told me this quite a few years back. "A coach can not force a kid to redshirt .......... but a kid can not force me to play him either!"
