redshirt policy--again

caught a bit of the gonzaga-st. mary's game the other night. announcer complimented mark few on his handling of kelly olynyk, their seven foot center whom they redshirted between his sophomore and junior years. said that one year as a redshirt was huge for olynyk, giving him more physical maturity and a better understanding of the game. turns out, mark few has redshirted 26 players during his tenure. five on the current roster are being or were redshirted.

is there anybody on our board who doubts the future productivity of either andy martin or jake wiley? is there anybody on this board who thinks they were as productive this year as they might have been as fifth-year seniors? is there any arguing with mark few's success? is there any reason a saner redshirt policy wouldn't work at montana?

You are right on. Tinks does not seem to want to red-shirt players. Can you imagine how good Qvale would have been with another season if he had red-shirted as a frosh?.

Coaches have to play for the now and not so much the later...and 1 big reason that redshirting is not a huge deal....a coach gets 4 more recruiting classes over the next 5 seasons. Having a kid for a 5th year is not a huge deal. For some kids is may be beneficial, but some kids are just not interested.

Yeah, yeah, yeah; and then when you redshirt a player he transfers to another school so he can get playing time. The reason Gonzaga can get away with redshirting some 26-odd players is because they're a big enough profile school that it would "seem" odd for someone to transfer out. Anyone keeping taps on each and every program in the country that's Division I that can make a reasonable comparison? Thought not.

Raason Young
Chase Adams
Vaughn Autry
Taylor Farnsworth
Ryan Nelson
Billy Reader
Marko Kovacevic
Wes Knox

These are the players I can think of off the top of my head that have left the U of M since 2009. Not sure how players transfering proves or disproves how reshirting can help or not help a team.
The NCAA figures over 10% of the current players will transfer before next season.

First, was just pointing out to Wyoming that Gonzaga has had numerous scholarship players leave. Second, way to boost your post by throwing in walk-ons and a kid that had no choice but to go elsewhere because of an NCAA decision.

First, I was just pointing out to WY that we have players leave too. Second, don't be a poopy pants because I quoted your post and will now point out that the kid that had to go elsewhere because of the NCAA could have choosen to come back to us next season.

I was not trying to be snooty, sorry if it rubbed you the wrong way. The point I was trying to make is, I don't see how kids leaving shows that redshirting is a bad thing.

Hey, don't take it out on me, dudes, I wasn't the one that dropped the line that said..."Mark Few has redshirted 26 players during his tenure."

I was but speculating that Gonzaga has a higher national profile than the entirety of the BSC and thought it was the reason why.

One thing that we as fans don't know about when it comes to the redshirt issue is what is said between the coaching staff and player during the recruiting process. To get some players to move to a place they've never been to and play in a bad conference, I imagine that the promise of early playing time might be part of the deal that sweetened the pot enough to get them into a Griz jersey in the first place. If a coach starts overselling a place and then singing a different tune when players get to campus and redshirting players, that sounds like a good way to hurt team morale and increase player attrition.

Now i hate to admit this, but i didnt follow the off season hoops stuff like i should have. What was the deal with Marko andwhy couldnt he play for Montana? Sounds like he would have been a difference maker for our team this year. Maybe somebody could fill me in.

Don't forget about a Zach Graves < http://www.chicowildcats.com/news/2008/8/13/MBB_0813080351.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and a Cameron Rundles < http://athletics.wofford.edu/roster.aspx?rp_id=1574" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Then there's a guy from Townsville, Australia that didn't feel he was getting enough playing time and transferred to Western Washington < http://wwuvikings.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/vanderjagt_dave00.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Having such stellar numbers his senior year of averaging 5.7 pts with 3.8 rbs a game; even leading his team in blocked shots with 36.

Plus there was also an Austin Swift whom I distinctly remember a Larry Kyrstkowiak mentioning at one time saying that he sure regrets not giving some more playing time for < http://www.broncoathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=58" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Whatever.
